Scroll down to "Reinstall Windows 10 using installation media"

    Keep Everything (Default)

All apps and settings are preserved.!
That is known as a "Custom" install. MS confuses the issue by saying your apps will be preserved. These "apps" they are referring to are the Store Apps, the ones with the tiles on your start menu. This is virtually identical to an in-place repair/upgrade.

This will NOT allow you to go backward from the Insider to RTM stable. We've been thru that.

ok, do it. Backup your data. Get the lastest build ISO using MCT, let it make you a bootable USB thumb drive, boot it, and clean install. Copy your data back. Install your apps.

I've oversimplified it here. look at:

is it equivalent to upgrade Windows and do an in-place Upgrade?

If I have an issue that may benefit by doing an in-place upgrade....is it equivalent to do an actual feature upgrade if available? such as if you're in Windows 10 2004 and can upgrade to 20H2 instead of doing a repair upgrade?

I don't recall being the option to keep files and apps during a feature upgrade like happens with an in-place-upgrade, so am I just forgetting or is that one difference between the two methods?

Keep files and apps during an upgrade from either an ISO file or a USB flash drive will be there. Otherwise it wouldn't be an upgrade, it would be either a custom or clean install. You need to run setup.exe from within your operating Windows 10, though. If you boot from the flash drive, that option won't be there.

    Blooming marvelous!
Thanks so much for this guide, thought I was completely screwed, I had a failed update and windows 10 "19041" update "KB4598242" came up with error 0x80073701, tried all the published methods such as "https://www.thewindowsclub.com/manually-reset-windows-update-components" but to no avail. This was my last hope ... AMAZING ... worked like a dream and everything worked as before and everything that was broken is fixed and updates work once more.

    Thank you TenForums.

    Hi Brink,

Why do I keep getting bad image error when launching apps after performing the procedure? I rolled back to my previous version and it was all good now but I just want to know so I can perform this again without issues in case I want to upgrade. Is it because I skipped downloading updates?
