How to Enable or Disable Reload in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Microsoft has adopted the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility. This new Microsoft Edge runs on the same Chromium web engine as the Google Chrome browser, offering you best in class web compatibility and performance.

The new Chromium based Microsoft Edge is supported on all versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server (2016 and above), Windows Server (2008 R2 to 2012 R2), and macOS.

Some sites are built to work with Internet Explorer and have functionality that isn't supported by modern browsers such as Microsoft Edge. If you need to view one of these sites, you can use Internet Explorer Mode in Microsoft Edge.

Most sites work better on modern browsers. For better speed and security, we recommend only using Internet Explorer mode when necessary.

If the Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode option is turned on, you can open sites that require Internet Explorer in Microsoft Edge using Internet Explorer mode. To reload the page in Internet Explorer mode, select Settings and more > More tools > Reload in Internet Explorer mode. If this option is off, it won’t appear under More tools.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode in the Chromium based Microsoft Edge.

Internet Explorer 11 will be retired on June 15, 2022 in Windows 10

EXAMPLE: Microsoft Edge | Internet Explorer mode and compatibility

EXAMPLE: "Reload in Internet Explorer mode" and "Exit Internet Explorer mode" context menu in Microsoft Edge

    Here's How:

    1 Open Microsoft Edge.

2 Click/tap on the Settings and more (Alt+F) 3 dots menu icon, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

Enable or Disable Reload in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge-microsoft_edge_settings.png

3 Click/tap on Default browser on the left side. (see screenshots below)

If you do not see a left pane, then either click/tap on the 3 bars menu button towards the top left OR widen the horizontal borders of the Microsoft Edge window until you do.

4 Turn on or off (default) Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode for what you want. (see screenshots below)

If you are on a device managed by your organization you will NOT see the option to Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer. On a managed device, will see the option Open sites in Internet Explorer mode ONLY if your organization has configured the policy to "Allow Internet Explorer mode testing".

Starting with Microsoft Edge Beta, Dev, and Canary, you will need to select Default, Allow, or Don't allow instead of turning on or off.

Default = We'll show you options to Reload in Internet Explorer mode depending on your recent Internet Explorer usage.

Allow = You'll be allowed to reload a page in Internet Explorer mode by selecting Settings and more > Reload in Internet Explorer mode. You can also select Reload tab in Internet Explorer mode when you right-click on a tab, or choose Open link in new Internet Explorer mode tab when you right click on a link.

Don't allow = You won't have the option to Reload in Internet Explorer mode.

Enable or Disable Reload in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge-microsoft_edge_reload_in_internet_explorer_mode.png Enable or Disable Reload in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge-microsoft_edge_reload_in_internet_explorer_mode-b.png

5 Click/tap on Restart to apply. (see screenshots below)

Enable or Disable Reload in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge-microsoft_edge_reload_in_internet_explorer_mode-2.png Enable or Disable Reload in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge-microsoft_edge_reload_in_internet_explorer_mode-3.png

6 You can now close the Settings tab if you like.

    That's it,

This no longer works in Edge version 89.0.774.48 and I haven't found a solution yet.

    Hello Reb00t,

The setting should still be available for you to turn on or off in Microsoft Edge Chromium.

This setting would only apply to site that still require Internet Explorer to open properly. There's not many of them left though. Most do support Microsoft Edge now.

Do you have the "Reload in Internet Explorer mode" context menu available (not grayed out) for sites after turning it on?

I have multiple computers at work that do not have the options you describe. The area that those options should be located in are completely blank. Not greyed out, just nothing there. I went home and updated my Edge to the latest version and those options are on my Win10 Pro home laptop. My home computer has the latest version of Win 10 (20H2) and my work computers are on version 1809 and fully patched. It's just a hunch, but i'll try upgrading one of those computers to version 20H2 and see if I get the options to enable IE compatibility. Thanks.

I look forward to hearing your findings.

Since these are work computers, it could also be from a policy below if disabled.

They indeed removed this IE-Mode switch from Edge 89. Please update your instructions here that these steps don't work anymore with the newer Edge versions.

Hello, and welcome to Ten Forums.

I still have the setting available in Microsoft Edge Stable 89.0.774.54 and Microsoft Edge Canary 91.0.828.0, and it will still load a site in Internet Explorer mode like in the example screenshot.

Grant it that Internet Explorer is no longer being supported though.

I have the same problem as well. The setting is missing on my (all) work computer's Stable Channel version, but it's there in Canary Channel. It's also there on my home computer's Stable Channel version. I'm assuming that a GPO is somehow disabling the setting from even appearing (not grayed out, completely missing). But I can't figure out what GPO setting would do that. Any help deciphering what is making it disappear would be helpful!

    Edge (stable) version = 91.0.864.41
