The main thing to realize is that both you and your partner have to install TeamViewer.

    Part One

    Download and install TeamViewer

1 Click here: Download to download TeamViewer. Next click on How to Install and Use TeamViewer-teamviewerdlff.jpg and save the TeamViewer_setup.exe file on your Desktop or in your Download folder or wherever you want to save it.

2 Go to wherever you saved the file, right click on it and select Open to start the install.

3 Make sure Default installation and Personal / Non-commercial use are selected, click Accept - finish.

4 Once the install completes, close the What's New window if it appears.

    Part Two2

    Run TeamViewer

1 If TeamViewer doesn't auto-start once the install completes, right click on the TeamViewer icon on your Desktop and select Open to start it. You will get a window like this.

The other person, your partner (one you are helping) also has to install and start TeamViewer.

2 The first time you start TeamViewer, click on Extras at the top then Options in the drop down and then Remote Control at left. Then check the Show your partner's cursor option under Display so you will be able to see if your partner is moving the cursor around while you are trying to do things. This can be very disconcerting and ins some cases cause real problems.

3 That person then gives you his (or her) Partner ID which you enter into the Partner ID box then you click Connect.

4 Next screen you will be asked for his/her password which he/she gives you and you enter and voilla` you connect to their computer and see their screen.

You will also see in the bottom right, this info window. You can get rid of it by clicking on the > in the tab outlined in red.

5 That's it. When done both of you can click the X at top right to close TeamViewer then close the next window which is just advertisement. Have fun.

    Part Three

    Transfer data with TeamViewer

You can transfer data to or from your computer to the other computer. This can come in very handy at times.

1 Rather than duplicate what is already available, simply click on Help in TeamViewer then select TeamViewer webhelp. In the TeamViewer Community window, enter file transfer in the Knowledge base Search here first box and click the magnifying glass. You will get the How can I transfer files with TeamViewer FAq which explains what you can do with File Transfer and how to use it.

    Have fun.

Thanks for doing this Rich. Will come in handy.

Might I suggest an additional step in the install.

I always set Teamviewer up to show the Partner's Cursor. I do this so that when I am helping someone and they are trying to point something out with their mouse I can see it. It is also handy as you can tell they are moving their mouse when you are trying to perform an action. Then you can politely say am I moving mouse or are you?

I'm assuming both sides need TeamViewer and both sides need to be logged in?

Also there was a limit of something of that imposed by Microsoft for use. Some were reporting they were closed or locked out for "unauthorized" use?

    Thanks.

Yes, you need host and client in a logged in state (same software.)

As for your other question, is it this?

Teamviewer goes "offline" when locking pc. - TeamViewer Community - 11612

I don't know if it has been resolved.

    HTH

P.S. Some AV's might bark, but if TeamViewer is clean, then exclude and permit use.

I think it would be useful to add a couple of sections:

TeamViewer security - if you choose to use a Teamviewer Account, it is recommended you use a strong password and two factor account authentication (some years ago, some users got hacked due to weak passwords and no 2FA.

Also a section on unattended access (security above is important especially here).

    unattended access.

I strongly recommend a section on the security as people need to understand risks of tools like Teamviewer - it is very secure if used properly.

Teamviewer has locked me out several times. Say I use it to much. I respond as long as I keep the spirit of agreement, I'm not charging, then I should be allowed to use. Their response, you use not much. I just stop using and go with MS Quick Assist. A couple of weeks later Teamviewer lets me back in. Even when the locked me out it was five minutes use followed by 10 minutes off.

Not sure we should use the term logged in. You start the software. Logging in sounds like you are doing something over and above with an id and password.

Yes there is granting access to the helper and there is an id and password but we are not logging in to teamviewer web site. Guess it is all in the wording.

Fully agree on strong password comment. Appears some hackers are using tools like this to log into peoples machines, buy stuff from shopping sites thereby bypassing some security checks. Some site are now scanning to see if these ports are open and if so refusing the transaction.
