How to Enable or Disable Extensions Toolbar Menu in Google Chrome

You can customize Google Chrome and add features and functionality by adding extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

The Extensions Toolbar Menu experimental feature in Google Chrome allows you to enable a separate toolbar button and menu for extensions.

The Extensions toolbar menu shows a list of all installed extensions, and allows you to quickly manage them from one central location. You can pin and unpin extensions on the toolbar, remove (uninstall) extensions, change options for extensions, and more.

The chrome://flags/#extensions-toolbar-menu experimental flag is no longer available in Google Chrome to enable or disable the extensions toolbar menu with. Instead, you will now have to use an extension added to the shortcut target string.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the Extensions Toolbar Menu in Google Chrome for your account in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

It appears the method in this tutorial no longer works in Google Chrome 91.

EXAMPLE: Extensions toolbar menu in Google Chrome

    Here's How:

1 Create a Google Chrome shortcut using either method below, and add a space and the extension you want to use below to the end of the shortcut string.

    (create shortcut)

    AND

(extension to enable extensions toolbar menu for shortcut)
    --enable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu

    OR

(extension to disable extensions toolbar menu for shortcut)
    --disable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu

    For example:

To create Google Chrome shortcut with extensions toolbar menu enabled:

    (32-bit Windows)
    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --enable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu

    (64-bit Windows)
    "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --enable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu

To create Google Chrome shortcut with extensions toolbar menu disabled:

    (32-bit Windows)
    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu

    (64-bit Windows)
    "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu

    That's it,
    Shawn Brink

Unfortunately the extensions-toolbar-menu flag has been removed in Chromium 87.0.4280.66, so it's no longer possible to disable the extensions toolbar menu and have the extension icons at the top of the regular Chrome menu.

edit: Thanks for finding a solution, Brink!

    As an added note:

You'll find, when right clicking on an extension, that the 'Hide in Chrome menu' option is greyed out...

but, just drag them in there, they'll stay!

Two questions about implementing the --enable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu parameter in Edge v87 (v87 Edge does not have a flag to enable or disable).....
    1. I modified the Edge shortcuts on the Tasbar and Start Menu, both with the --enable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu parameter. Are there any other shortcuts to modify?
    2. If I launch Edge using the modified taskbar/start menu shortcuts, the extension menu appears. However, if I launch Edge from an internet shortcut saved to a directory, the extension menu does NOT appear. How do I make the extension menu appear in Edge when launching from URL files/internet shortcuts saved to a folder?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

You can add --enable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu to the end of the shortcut like below.

    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" https://www.tenforums.com -new-window --enable-features=ExtensionsToolbarMenu

    Good afternoon @Brink!

In the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\ folder, there is no shortcut file, only msedge.exe .

I cannot modify the target of the exe file and I cannot create a shortcut in that folder. What should I do now?

    Thanks!

I should probably clarify what I am asking....

I have many folders with saved bookmark files. They are Internet Shortcut files, either URL or IE.AssocFile.URL files generated by saving bookmarks from Chrome, Internet Explorer or Edge to folders as actual files. So when I execute those bookmark files, Edge launches without extension menu. It seems that the URL, internet shortcut and IE.AssocFile.URL files launch in Edge without the extension menu parameter loading. How do I get saved bookmark files to open in Edge while passing the target parameters?

    Does that help?

    Thanks!

Any favorite you open within the same Microsoft Edge window you have this enabled on will still show it.

This below with your own URL should work for Microsoft Edge with 64-bit Windows 10.

    @Brink

Ok, I figured out how to create the shortcuts. Did you see the update I added to my last reply? Does your solution apply to saved URL/internet shortcut files as well ?

    Thanks!
