How to Change Default Search Engine in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Microsoft has adopted the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility. This new Microsoft Edge runs on the same Chromium web engine as the Google Chrome browser, offering you best in class web compatibility and performance.

The new Chromium based Microsoft Edge is supported on all versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server (2016 and above), Windows Server (2008 R2 to 2012 R2), and macOS.

Microsoft Edge uses the Bing search engine by default for both the address bar and new tab page search box.

Microsoft Edge currently allows you to change the default search engine used for the address bar.

Starting with Microsoft Edge Canary 82.0.453.0 version, you can now change the default search engine used for the search box on the new tab page.

This tutorial will show you how to change the default search engine used for the address bar and new tab page search box in the Chromium based Microsoft Edge.

EXAMPLE: Microsoft Edge address bar and search box on new tab page

    Here's How:

    1 Open Microsoft Edge.

2 Click/tap on the Settings and more (Alt+F) 3 dots menu icon, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on Privacy, search, and services on the left side, and click/tap on the Address bar and search link under the Services section on the right side. (see screenshot below)

If you do not see a left pane, then either click/tap on the 3 bars menu button towards the top left OR widen the horizontal borders of the Microsoft Edge window until you do.

4 Select the Search engine used in the address bar you want in its drop menu. (see screenshot below)

5 Select either Search box (Bing) or Address bar (same search engine you selected for address bar in step 4) for the search engine you want to use for the search box on the new tab page in the Search on new tab uses search box or address bar drop menu. (see screenshot below)

The Search on new tab uses search box or address bar setting will only be available in the Microsoft Edge Canary 82.0.453.0 version and higher.

The Search on new tab uses search box or address bar setting will only be available if you selected a search engine other than Bing (Recommended default) for the Search on new tab uses search box or address bar setting in step 4.

6 You can now close the Settings tab if you like.

    That's it,

    @Brink

Why Edge adds different URLs as search engine choice list option (SS below)? URLs list increase time to time and I don't know how and why Edge adds those URLs that are irrelevant to "Search Engine"!

These are just the most common search engines that Microsoft Edge has included by default to make easier to select. Luckily, you can click/tap on the 3 dots menu to the the right of them to remove any you do not want.

I knew that (delete option in 3 dots). Is there a way to prevent automatically adding those common search engine URLs to the list?

Pinterest is common search engine(?!) .As I know it's just a rubbish photo ad link and idea board (actually Copy and Paste idea board).

I'm not aware of a way to prevent it.

Does anyone have an update to these instructions? The"Privacy, search and services" does NOT exist in Edge Version 107.0.1418.56.

These are the only options in settings:

Of course, I find a solution after I give up and post the question!

    1. Click on the gear (bottom right of the right pane) or the 3 dots (top right)
    2. Select "Settings"

    3. Select the hamburger menu (3 parallel lines in the upper left corner)

    4. Select "Privacy, search and services"

    5. Scroll completely to the bottom of the section and
    6. select "Address bar and search"

    7. Select your preferred search engine
    8. If it's not listed, select the "Manage search engines"

If the above instructions don't work for you, follow the instructions for enabling search engine customization. In my case, I had to do it before it would let me change the search engine.
