Thought I'd try Synctoy and immediately ran into confusion during the install.

First screen shows this; I would have thought I already had this required component. I have multiple .NET Framework folders on C.

Saying "yes" to that leads here, which has many choices and looks like a morass:

    Advice?

It's this you need to enable and install in Programs and Features. Then it will be fine.

Just the main part, not the sub features.... ignore the link to the MS DL site. Just Programs and Features.

That's great info to know as I typically download the .NET 2.0 for another app I install. Never knew you could enable in in Windows features. Thanks for the post.

I used SyncToy about 10 years ago. Stopped using it because of problems related to the use of "letters" to identify the UFDs, as I remember. I donīt have the details.

    Since 2011 I use FreeFileSync.

I installed it a couple of hours ago and have been playing with it.

I did not experience that particular problem noted in your link, but I did have an instance of it refusing to follow rules I established----using echo mode, it copied a folder of mp3s that I had specifically excluded---I did check that I had excluded that folder.

    Not inspiring.

After deleting the copy it made and reconfiguring, it has run OK since then.

And it seems you cannot exclude by extension. Not a deal breaker, but it makes exclusions more tedious as you apparently have to walk down a folder tree and exclude by folder or by each specific file---among thousands in my case.

Edit................hmmmm. I see you supposedly can exclude .doc files by entering *.doc in a box. I tried that. The target folder still had a wad of .doc files.......................when using echo mode. I infer that means that the exclusion only means that .doc files are disregarded on the source folder.

Dunno---I should probably stick with SyncBackFree, which has worked flawlessly for several years.
