Thank, but that isn't really what I meant. What I would like is for the icons to arrange from the left, and to folder size like in auto arrange, but in the order that I chooose. e.g.
Thanks, Shawn, your bat files really worked, and so easy to do! Disabling auto-arrange worked on both my Windows 10 and Windows 7 computers, but now I'm running into another problem with my Windows 7. After running your bat file, I'm unable to use the Tab key to rename files now. Before, with auto-arrange, I was able to rename all the files in a folder by tabbing through each one right after the other, typing in different names for each one as I pleased. I would select the file, type the name, press tab, and the cursor would jump to the next file allowing me to type in another name. Now, this tab key renaming feature no longer works. Now when I press tab after renaming the file, nothing happens, the file just stays highlighted along with the file next to it, almost as if I pressed Enter and not Tab. The only way to get the Tab key renaming feature is I have to run your 'Enable Auto Arrange' bat file, and then it goes back to working just fine. Is there a way I can both rename my files using the Tab key and having Auto Arrange disabled, too?
By the way, I also tried the bat file for Windows 7 that I found in one of your posts, and it still didn't work.
Hello Jeanettee, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)
I haven't test this in Windows 7 yet, but you might see how using Option 1 in the tutorial below to enable auto arrange works for you in Windows 7. In Windows 10, it still allows me to use the Tab key for renaming.

That seemed to work for W7 too: Related question. How to do this for removable (USB) drives and my android when I plug them in? I despise them removing the ability to make a default apply across the board and to every drive and folder now and forever. grrr
Hello Chuck, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)
So far, Windows 10 is remembering the folder view settings of a USB flash drive for me even after being disconnected as long as the drive letter remains the same.
I don't think it will be possible for an Android device though.
Now that you mention it, I realize that my "thumb's" are keeping the same view all the time. That's on 7 and 10 both I think, haven't checked fully yet.
Too bad about the android.
FWIW, If you come across a fix for the android's...
You're welcome. :)
Fingers crossed for Android, but I don't think it will since it uses a different file system.
Hello Brink. We have a question about Disable_Auto_Arrange_in_File_Explorer-Details.bat.
If I run that, will my wife be able to arrange the details and Icon views without it resorting if she changes the name of an item?
