How to Change New Tab Page Layout and Background in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Microsoft has adopted the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility. This new Microsoft Edge runs on the same Chromium web engine as the Google Chrome browser, offering you best in class web compatibility and performance.

The new Chromium based Microsoft Edge is supported on all versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server (2016 and above), Windows Server (2008 R2 to 2012 R2), and macOS.

By default, when you open a new tab in Microsoft Edge, you see a Bing search bar, Bing image of the day as the background, quick links as tiles of your most visited sites, and Bing news content visible to scroll.

Starting with Microsoft Edge version 83.0.472.0, you can now use your own custom image for the New Tab page background.

Starting with Microsoft Edge version 86.0.622.0 , you can now select to use a custom theme on the New Tab page background.

This tutorial will show you how to change the New Tab page layout and background to customize how you want it to appear in the Chromium based Microsoft Edge.

    Here's How:

    1 Open Microsoft Edge.

2 Open a New tab (Ctrl+T), and click/tap on the Gear icon. (see screenshot below)

3 Select between a Focused, Inspirational, Informational, or Custom page layout you want. (see screenshot below)

4 If you select Custom, you can select the custom settings below you want for the New tab page. (see screenshots below)

    A) Turn on (default) or off to Show quick links.

    B) Turn on (default) or off Recommended Searches. (REMOVED)

If you turn off background, it will remove the Recommended Searches setting.

    C) Turn on (default) or off to Show greeting.

The Show greeting setting will only be available if you are signed in to Microsoft Edge.

    D) Select Off, Image of the day (Bing), Your own image, or Custom theme as background.

If you select Your own image, you can Upload an image OR Remove an existing image.

If you select Custom theme, you can click/tap on the Manage button that will take you to the Settings > Appearance > Customize browser > Custom theme page in Microsoft Edge.

    E) Select Bing news content to: Content visible, Headings only, Content visible on scroll (default), or Content off.

There is another option on the NTP called "Show greeting":

This option is still part of the CFR, but will soon be available to all insiders.

    Hi

    Where is the option?

Is there a way to get rid of this ridiculous page (SS below, the Edge default background on "NTP")?
Every time I open the Edge for first time the default page is this default background (I have changed "On startup" option behavior to "New Tab" but it takes too long to load the Edge and uses High CPU resources. I have added "0.0.0.0 ntp.msn.com" and "0.0.0.0 assets.msn.com" to the "hosts" file as a trick to disable it but it didn't work!

There was a new feature in Edge v83 (developer channel) option that allows to select NTP default search engine (we could change it from Bing to Google), but there is not such option in the latest stable (current) version! (SS below, 83.0.478.37 Official Build)

    Hello @atinfo,

It doesn't look like the custom option has made it to the Stable builds yet.

I see the same thing on my New tab page and its settings in my Microsoft Edge Stable. Hopefully, this will be sorted in the next version release.

My current version is the same!

I just downloaded official offline installer (latest version=83.0.478.37) and install it but it is the same...

The default background (Edge icon on the horizon of the big blue ocean!) just shows up for first time (when I open Edge as first time) then after opening a couple NTP the background changes to Bing search box (or bar, like SS above).

Edge version 83 developer channel had an option to change this search option too (we could change it from Bing to Google) but there is nothing in official build (v83) options!
