    @Kari

    You said,
To test everything, I removed WSL and Ubuntu from my computer, restarted, and reinstalled WSL and Ubuntu. I then followed the instructions in this tutorial to the letter, as if it was new to me, if I didn't know anything about how it works. I had no issues. Desktop experience, everything works like a charm
Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to retest the desktop installation.

I have a perfectly functional terminal version, but am lacking the desktop. After sleeping on it, I have a few things that are slight departures from the instructions, but potential hiccups, in my attempts to create the desktop.
    • I assumed that your script modified the hosts file; therefore, I did not do so manually. If my assumption was incorrect, please let me know.
    • I installed the current version, Ubuntu 20.04LTS. I don't know if this is significant. Your tutorial uses Ubuntu 18.04LTS.
    • By force of habit, not thought, I fully updated my Ubuntu installation immediately after creating my user name and password. The tutorial does not instruct me to do this. Should I have moved to the next step instead?

I intend to perform a new install, pending your reply. It may be tomorrow before I have the time available. (maybe not ... who knows?)

    regards,

There is no script, I really do not understand what you mean.

    Ubuntu version is irrelevant.

The tutorial emphasises, that you should update Ubuntu before adding the desktop experience, making it quite clear that updates should be made before adding the desktop. See steps 1.1 and 1.2.

Maybe my understanding of WSL and how it works is flawed. I was thinking that WSL is similar to running a web site locally. (because of establishing a remote connection to the same computer) I was comparing that to a guest LAMP server development environment running in a VM using hosts files entries to view web pages on the host computer. ... as for the script ... I was referring to
    sudo sed -i 's/3389/3388/g' /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini
    in step 4.3 coupled with
Connect to Ubuntu XFCE desktop with Windows Remote Connection using the following address:localhost:3388
in step 5.2. I should have called it a command, not a script. Also the localhost part looked like an entry in the hosts file. Obviously the comparison is invalid.

all other replies ... Thanks. ... Gothcha.

    Hi there
Well done -- getting a full desktop is great. I've tried to get a KDE desktop but that has eluded me -- some apps work fine - but your ubuntu desktop looks good.

Wonder if this works on W11 (I'm going to have a go with the leaked build I've got running on a spare laptop).

Performance isn't that horrible either. Install xfsprogs on the ubuntu system and you aren't just restricted to ext4 file systems when browsing. Samba also works properly so you can directly share Linux formatted drives from a NAS (although of course Windows can share those too - but why not !!!) . Install ntfs-3g on the ubuntu system as well for Linux R/W on ntfs volumes. GPARTED GUI partition manager works brilliantly as does GRSYNC which IMO is far better than ROBOCOPY for data / file / directory backup. Using CRONTAB on the WSL you can schedule backups to be sent to NAS. Loads of things can be done with WSL.

I also like WSL for using python. Great simple language for creating any sort of project without having to be a "professional coder".

One Bonkers idea I'm going to try is to see if I can get a L.A.M.P server running -- (Linux, Apache,MySQL (now uses MariaDB instead of MySQL but same commands etc), PHP. This works decently on a Native Linux machine but want to try it on WSL. I know one can do W.A.M.P (Windows, Apache --etc) but that never works properly for me !! and I hate the Windows IIS.

    Cheers

    Hi guys,

I have a friend that is having an issue with WSL 2 and booting Windows when enabled. Thus has endless spinning circles at boot. Only fix is to disable virtualization/Vt-d in bios. This is happening on a fairly recent Dell XPS i9 laptop. Anyone come across a solution please share..

    Thank you.
