    How to Turn On or Off Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge Chromium

    Microsoft has adopted the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility. This new Microsoft Edge runs on the same Chromium web engine as the Google Chrome browser, offering you best in class web compatibility and performance.

    Microsoft has also introduced a new Microsoft Edge logo that is designed to capture the waves of innovation that they plan to bring to you.

    The new Chromium based Microsoft Edge is supported on all versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server (2016 and above), Windows Server (2008 R2 to 2012 R2), and macOS.

    Microsoft Edge will automatically save items you want to download into your C:\Users\<username>\Downloads (%UserProfile%\Downloads) folder by default.

    This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off to always ask what to do with each download in the Chromium based Microsoft Edge.

    Contents

    • Option One: Turn On or Off Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge in Microsoft Edge Settings
    • Option Two: Enable or Disable Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge for All Users using a REG file

    OPTION ONE

    Turn On or Off Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge in Microsoft Edge Settings

    1 Open Microsoft Edge.

    2 Click/tap on the Settings and more (Alt+F) 3 dots menu icon, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

    3 Click/tap on Downloads in the left pane, and turn on or off (default) Ask me what to do with each download on the right side for what you want. (see screenshot below)

    If you do not see a left pane, then either click/tap on the 3 bars menu button towards the top left OR widen the horizontal borders of the Microsoft Edge window until you do.

    4 You can now close the Settings tab in Microsoft Edge if you like.

    OPTION TWO

    Enable or Disable Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge for All Users using a REG file

    You must be sign in as an administrator to do this option.

    This option uses the PromptForDownloadLocation policy to enable or disable whether to ask where to save a file before downloading it. If you enable this policy, the user is asked where to save each file before downloading; if you don't configure it, files are saved automatically to the default location, without asking the user. If you don't configure this policy, the user will be able to change this setting.

    The downloadable .reg files below will add and modify the DWORD value in the registry key below.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge

    PromptForDownloadLocation DWORD

    (delete) = Default
    0 = Always disabled
    1 = Always enabled

    1 Do step 2 (enable), step 3 (disable), or step 4 (default) below for what you would like to do.

    2 To Force Enable Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge for All Users

    This step will force the Ask me what to do with each download setting in Option One to always be turned on without users being able to change this setting.

    3 To Force Disable Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge for All Users

    This step will force the Ask me what to do with each download setting in Option One to always be turned off without users being able to change this setting.

    Download

    4 Undo Force Enable or Disable Ask Where to Save in Microsoft Edge for All Users

    This is the default setting.

    This step will allow users to use Option One to turned on and off the Ask where to save each file before downloading setting in Microsoft Edge.

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

    Default_user_choice_Ask_where_to_save_each_file_before_downloading_in_Microsoft_Edge.reg

    Download

    5 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

    6 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

    7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

    8 If Microsoft Edge is currently open, then close and reopen Microsoft Edge to apply.

    9 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn Brink

    This solution doesn't work. It still doesn't ask me where to put file I want to download

    Just to verify, do you have Ask where to save each file before downloading turned on?

    If so, what is the download link it's not working for? I'll test it on my system.

    Same here, it worked for about a week, same link, but now Edge Chromium just dumps everything in my Download folder
    Sicilian when downloading a pgn file. Never had this issue with Edge and Firefox.

    Hi Shawn, what makes things worse is that Edge Chromium no longer asks where to store a download (as per the settings) but opens the download with the default apps automatically, this is a bug and can create havoc when downloading a system file. I will report it in Feedback too.

    It seems to happen only with certain sites (Sicilian) when I click on Download it saves and opens a PGN file but on other sites I get a tiny message on the left bottom asking where to save the download.

    Could be some issue with that site.

    Do you have a "save as' option when you right click on a download link?

    Nope, I saw that option only once after I just installed Edge Chromium but ever since I just see a tiny box lower left corner with the question where to save it (no autorun). I have been using the site with the download problem for years with old Edge and Firefox and both always asked "Save As" never run when clicking on download so this has something do do with Chromium, no big deal as long as it happens only with that site; you don't want to autorun a download meant for another computer.....

    @Brink
    Found the problem in Edge Chromium-Download settings, there was a file type default for Automatic opening that I cleared (all) and Voila, I not only get to select the directory to save the download in but the file also no longer opens.
