Not sure if this has already be mentioned but installing MS Essentials 2012 with Photo Gallery does very much what the Windows Photo Viewer once did. You can then select Open With ... Photo Gallery. I know MS Essentials 2012 is a little old now, but it works :)

As mentioned before the MS Photos app does the same thing, Open with ... Photos :)

That said the original Windows Photo Viewer was simple and good :)

    For the Original Poster

I love you original poster! Thanks for posting this information! Windows Photo Viewer is WAY better for desktops (non-tablets). So happy to have it back. You rock! Created just an account to say thank you :)

I can't locate the .exe file for Photo Viewer. How do you make a shortcut to start it directly?

    Hello Steve, :)

Windows Photo Viewer doesn't have an .exe file, It's run by dllhost.exe COM Surrogate instead. It needs to be opened as the default program from the file.
