I believe someone else here basically mentioned the same thing I'm experiencing. When you open an image file for the first time is asks you what you want to use to open it. Then if you select Photo Viewer it'll open it in Photo Viewer but after that it wont ask you anymore and only open it in Paint.
Something else that's odd is if you run the reg file then save or create an image file (with any extension) you get a pop up message saying that something caused a problem. Image attached.
Just to verify, did you set "Windows Photo Viewer" as the default app before opening or saving an image?
Isn't that the point of the Reg File? For 1507 and 1607 all I did was run:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.jpg]
@="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
For each file type. That was all that was required to set all file types to Photo Viewer. That no longer works for 1809 and the reg files in the OP don't work for me either. My process when loading a machine for my organization is install windows, run reg file, do some other stuff, done. All config setup is that reg file. After reboot all associations with images are hosed. I then have to go into default apps, reset and set the default app manually.
The .reg file will only add the needed registry settings for Windows Photo Viewer to be able to be set as the default app.
You will still have to actually set Windows Photo Viewer as the default app (step 9 Option 1 & 2) after merging the .reg file to avoid the "An app default was reset" notification you got
That was never needed before. Simply to turn on the Photo Viewer app as selectable only requires a few reg keys. So then what's the point of Restore_Windows_Photo_Viewer_ALL_USERS that contains the old way of doing it that never needed it?
In that case simply run the enable REG file then go select it. No need for any of that huge list of extra keys. WinKey, default, drop down Photo Viewer, done.
What a shame. Before 1809 used to just run the REG file, done. Didn't have to select anything.
Nope, as myself and someone else has stated only the other keys where ever needed. With over 300 workstations and over 2000 machine activations with 1507 and 1607, that's what always worked for me.
As for now, all you need is the Photo Viewer enabled keys. Seeing as how you have to go in and select it manually anyway like you said. Windows is perfectly capable of working on it's own. None of those other keys are needed, they do nothing.
The bits for current user are for adding "Windows Photo Viewer" to the "Open with" context menu for each supported file type.
The all users option includes all registry entries before "Windows Photo Viewer" was removed, and is why I included them to fully restore.
