Another issue I've discovered is that whenever I Right-Click -> Open With -> Windows Photo Viewer, then Windows 10 sets this as the default open program (I'm NOT specifying to always open with Windows Photo Viewer, but it does so anyway). This is a problem because I want to maintain Photoshop as the default app to open jpg files.

The Right-Click -> Image Preview does not change the default app, so that's better, but the sorting doesn't work this way.

Odd. I just tested on my system running Windows 10 1903, and Right-Click > Open With > Windows Photo Viewer didn't set it as the default app for me.

If you set Photos back as the default app, does it still do this for you afterwards?

Yes, I set Photoshop as the default app, and Right-Click Open with Windows Photo Viewer sets WPV as the default app again.

Odd. How about with the usual default Photos store app?

Oddly the problem has stopped since I rebooted. Windows 10 explorer seems to be less stable that Windows 7 in this regard. I'll keep monitoring and advise. But in any case, having the "Image Preview" sorted correctly would be most helpful.

    Good news so far.

    Hi folks,

Browsed the thread but a lot to read. I restored WPV a long time ago and did it again tonight. It is set as default. It opens jpg, cr2, etc just fine. But I cannot set it for .dng files (not in the open with list) nor set it from the default for .dng file types (not there either).

Double clicking and asks how to open but few choices. BUT....

If I add a jpg to the folder with dng's, open the jpg then advance on WPV, the dng's open just fine!!!

Can you help with this one?

    Thanks.

    Hello Bob,

As a test, see if this will set Windows Photo Viewer the default app for .dng files for you. I was able to do so on my system after using Option 2.

    1) Right click on a .dng file.

    2) Click on Open with > Choose another app.

    3) Click on the More apps link in the "How do you want to open this file?" dialog.

    4) Scroll down, and select Windows Photo Viewer.

    5) Check the Always use this app to open .dng files box, and click on OK.

Thanks, but WPV does not appear in that list! Seems that I have no way to set WPV as the default for .dng. It allows WPV using the ocde, can set jpg, png etc as WPV as default, just not PNG.

BUT, as mentioned if a jpg is in the same folder and is opened first, then using the forward and back buttons in WPV opens the dngs. But double clicking a dng does not.

    Driving me slightly nuts :)

Odd. Did you use Option Two to restore Windows Photo Viewer?

No, option 1. I am about to try to remove 1 and install 2.
