Hi Brink, thanks for your excellent guide :)

I'm having a hell of a time finalizing my new windows 10 image (using LTSB version) where there is no "photos" app and images/pictures are opened with paint as default.

I've used your guide and been able to then select the windows photo viewer in the default apps settings or open images with windows photo viewer.

However, here's where the issue starts. Each time a new user logs in, the photo viewer is no longer the default app. Is there a way that this can be set automatically upon any time a new user logs in? Perhaps running a reg file or batch file?

It's not really going to be ideal to ask each user to manually set this setting from the default app list whenever they log in to a different computer.

I've tried setting it in the following locations to no avail:

    1. Local pc gpo (default file association file)
    2. Domain gpo (default file association file)
    3. Setting it in the default app setting and specifying in a sysprep unattend.xml to copy settings to a default profile.

Really looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Best regards.
    @Hilltops, Welcome to Tenforums!

Did you use Option #1 or Option #2? 1 is for current user, 2 is for all users.

Hello Hilltops, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

After you have Windows Photo Viewer restored and set as the default app in your account, you could use Option 1 in the tutorial below to export your default app associations, then use Option 2 to import them for new users on the PC.

Default App Associations - Export and Import for New Users in Windows

This way any new user accounts created will have this already set for them.

Thanks very much for the information Brink. I should have mentioned I had also used the dism import/export method also. It works as in it sets default apps of IE and outlook on new accounts however it will not set the photo viewer to default perhaps because we've had to "tweak" the registry to even get the photo viewer to show up. It would be great if there is some sort of bat file or reg file we could create to run on any new user log ins.

I'm not aware of another way to import it for new users.

Thank you Brink you have just saved me a fortune on a new laptop. My old windows 7 laptop died on me and I am having to use my Windows 10. I could not print borderless prints from the photos app in Windows 10. I have orders coming in left right and centre for prints and it looked like I was going to have to buy a new old laptop You saved my life you hero!

Forgive me for not reading through the whole thread, as I have read much of it in the past, but I do not recall anything similar to this question I have now.

I believe that Windows Photo Viewer is not a Windows Application with an .exe extension but an executable .dll called through Rundll.exe, and therefore it is called when a set of circumstances require it.

    Now for the question:

Is it possible to have a "wrapper" application or script that will call up Windows Photo Viewer and present an open file dialog so that a file or files in a folder of choice can be viewed? Is anyone aware of such an app or script?

    Hey Chris @Fafhrd, :)

I had created a shortcut a while back that directly opened Windows Photo Viewer, but it only opened blank with no way to select an image to open within it.

I'm not aware of anything else though.
