Macrium Reflect - Create a Rescue Partition  

Great tutorial Kari, thank you!
After fitting an SSD to a fairly old system, which is very fussy regarding booting from USB, I used your method to create the Macrium recovery partition on the original HDD.
Works like a charm!

I am trying to download Macrium Reflect free edition following your tutorial. I tried earlier but decided to cancel as I realised I needed a clean external hard drive with plenty of space on it. I now have that and downloaded from Macrium via this site. I had downloaded to the Downloads Folder of my User Account and realised the destination should be Windows C: Programs Folder.
I tried to change the destination and create a Macrium Folder in the Programs Folder. The download crashed.

I received Error Code 1. Do you need me to post this before you can help ? By booting do Macrium just mean restart ? I can disable Malwarebytes. Do I also need to disable Windows (Microsoft) Defender ?
I would appreciate some advice.

Downloading the Macrium Installer to your user downloads folder is fine, just like downloading any other program installer. When you run the installer, it will install Macrium Reflect Free application to the correct location on the C: drive. Mine is installed in C:\Program Files\Macrium\Reflect by the Macrium installer.

Hi Kari,

I used your tutorial to create a recovery partition (Thanks a lot!). Now I see that this macrium rescue partition is a must to have. However, my ssd is set to MBR and I've reached the limit number of primary partitions. I would like to know if I can use the same partition for recovery and macrium rescue. If so, can I just copy files from the iso created by macrium to the recovery partition?

Kari and all - many thanks again. Question -

Is it possible to do this so that the start-up choice in step 2.6 does NOT appear? I would prefer that (a) my PC always boot normally into Win 10 without step 2.6 and (b) the Rescue partition appear as a choice ONLY if I hit F12 as I reboot, which will show me the one-time boot selections.
(Today, when I create a Macrium Rescue USB stick with its PE environment, I run it by hitting F12 as I boot and then select it instead of the typical Win 10 boot entry. I'd like to do the same thing if I have Rescue on a dedicated partition on a second drive )

Open MR, select Other Tasks, Create Rescue Media, Windows Boot Media, and select Remove boot media.
But then you should have a bootable USB as an alternative in case the C: drive is damaged and a restore is needed.
Alternatively, the boot menu could be set to display for 5 seconds. The boot menu has the added advantage of being able to selecting "other activities" as an alternative to F12. I cannot count on the number of times that I have hit F12 too slowly and it has booted into Windows.

Quandary - thanks and some follow-up questions:

1. Earlier today, I created a virgin partition in a second drive in my PC, did the MR - Windows Boot Media into it, and gave it drive letter M: . When I then rebooted, that gave me step 2.6 option above. I then went back to MR and did what you suggest -- Remove boot media. On reboot, I no longer get step 2.6 but if I reboot and hit F12, there is no option to start the MR Rescue -- it's not there in the F12 selections.
   
2. How do I get the step 2.6 choice to display for only 5 (or 4 or 2) seconds?
   
3. What do you mean by other activities?

You can copy the files from the Reflect iso to a separate hard drive fat32 partition, and on some pcs, your pc will allow you to select that partition to boot from if you go into bios.

1. Just put the .iso into a fat 32 partition on my second drive, or "install" it into that partition?
2. Does that partition need a drive letter?
3. Should I take some steps to make that partition bootable? What steps?

Start MR from within Windows and follow the steps I outlined. When Windows Boot Media is displayed you can add MR to the boot option. Then boot the PC. At the boot selection screen select the text in the lower part of the screen. From there you can change the boot display time, go to Windows Recovery, boot to BIOS, etc.
I have not tried putting the .iso is another partition as it complicates activities.
