Would windows 8.0 have the same or different steps as 7? Also 8.1?

Upgrade from windows 8 to windows 10 on laptop
It would be the same steps as below to upgrade from Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

    Upgrade to Windows 10

    Hi All

Brink, First a thanks from my side. I have been using your script for auto System Restore points for many years.

I am running win8. I want to create/shrink a new partition on my SSD C: drive to install win10 on. This is to use dual boot to first set up win10 to all my likes.
Then I want to delete the partition with win8, and extend the new SSD partiton so win10 can use the whole SSD.

Will this work? The new partition for win10 will not be called C: at creation.
Will this change to C: when I delete the old win8 partition that was C: ? (hope I am making sense)

    Thanks!

Hello Finhobbyist, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Was there a reason you wanted to keep Windows 8.1 installed for now instead of doing a clean install of Windows 10 OR upgrade to Windows 10 from the Windows 8.1?

If you wanted to upgrade for free to Windows 10, then you could still use the method in this tutorial or the one below to do so without the need to dual boot.

Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

I say this since Windows 8.1 would be on the first partition left of the second Windows 10 partition instead of after (right) of the Windows 10 partition. It will be a bit more involved to merge the partitions after you delete Windows 8.1 because of this without having to use 3rd party disk management software.

Technically, to dual boot you need two licenses for Windows and you currently have only one license. Now assuming that you purchase the second license for Windows so you can dual boot without violating the EULA, you could also shrink your existing Windows 8.1 partition and then copy it to a new partition so you have 2 Windows 8.1 exactly the same. Then upgrade one of them to Windows 10 to try it out. Or, as you propose you could do a clean install of Windows 10 to the new partition.

In regards to drive letters - whichever OS you boot into will get C: drive. When you dual boot, your drive letters will switch around depending upon which OS you boot into.

Deleting the old Windows 8 partition and expanding the Windows 10 partition to fill the empty space can be done easily with MiniTool Partition Wizard Free:

I decided to resurrect my old windows 7 laptop that I had in the closet because all the old features wouldnt work, well today i decided to buy a new charger and see what I could do.

it was a flawless upgrade and the previous fingerprint scanner that didnt work now works. there may still be some life left to this old beast. thank you for the detailed way to upgrade that i didnt have to pay for to upgrade.

I upgraded my Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro. Despite Win 8.1 using less resources than Windows 7, it's not as snappy and responsive as my old Windows 7. Now that I have a new Windows 10 laptop, I just might reinstall Windows 7 from a previous image. Windows 7 runs the best on legacy (pre 2011 systems) and those using HDDs vs SSDs.
