I see that the download link in the tutorial now leads to the Media Creation Tool for version 2004. Is it still possible to get the MCT for version 1909?

Wouldn't do any good, it would either make the latest 2004 media anyway or tell you that it's out of date and you need the latest MCT.
If you want a 1909 ISO then your only option is to use one of zbook's links.

    Edit: tested MediaCreationTool1909.exe...

Thanks for the step by step tutorial. I'm just about ready to go ahead with this; I see the media creation tool now has Win10 2004 which makes me a bit nervous, since it sounds like it has a few kinks to work out.

I share your nervousness. I upgraded one home desktop to Win10 1909 without issues, intending to give it some time to get the feel for Win10 before upgrading the other one, now I've left it to the point where I'm happier holding onto Win7 on that machine until the experts are a bit more confident about the reliability of version 2004. Do keep us informed, please!

I've just had an elderly friend on the phone who has W7 on her desktop and W10 on a laptop. Now she and husband have got used to W10 has asked if I can upgrade her legal W7 desktop to W10.

Is it still a free upgrade?

    Yes.

Make Images with Macrium Reflect, if you can, before trying the updates.
