Hello @BoomShaka, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If they are happy with Windows 7, then it's fine to let them stay on it. Especially since it's running and working so well for them.

You could let them play on one of your Windows 10 PCs to see how they like it, and let them know if anything they don't like can be customized to help.

Hi @BoomShaka, and yes, welcome to 10F!

    I agree with Shawn (Brink) and will add;
You made a casual remark about using IE11 so there is some internet usage. The concern in using IE11 and the internet is security because unless your 'family' is paying for extended support those updates including security updates will stop in three days and that will leave their machine wide open to attack from bad actors on the web. The only recourse would be to have a third-party antivirus/malware like Norton for example for protection.

You can check my post #181 to see how it went for me and there is a link to my win7 system specs before the pixs but I'm not sure if you can see them if your not a member of SevenForums.

Golden, thanks for the current upgrade status. It helps to know that info rather than remaining in the dark. Jim

I just upgraded my ProStar Win7 Pro laptop to Windows 10 using this tutorial, and I wanted to say Thank You!!! I could not have done this alone.

So far, it seems to have gone very well. My WIn7 Pro became Win10 Pro,and it activated just fine. I had downloaded the latest tool, so it upgraded me directly to version 1909 and then I only had a couple of Windows updates to apply.

I made a Windows system image of my C drive and a Win10 repair disk right away. I'll also make a Macrium system image since it's faster and I've used it in the past with success.

My antivirus/malware apps appear to still run (I ran them), my old Office 2007 appears to still run (I'll be upgrading now that I'm on Win10), and I'm about to check the rest of my important apps.

Any suggestions for what else I need to do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello Laurie,

It sounds like you did all your prep work. The most important having a system image backup as a fail safe.

You will be notified of any compatibility issues during the update prep process, and will have a chance to cancel the update at this point before it starts the upgrade and be a point of no return.

so im planning on upgrading my father's graphics card from his old amd hd 7770 to an rx 580, but besides the psu maybe needing an upgrade, on the drivers & downloads page for the rx 580, im only seeing 2 windows OS: 7 and 10

his computer is running windows 8.1 pro 64-bit, and while I might be able to convince him to make the switch to windows 10 from 8.1, I don't know if it'll work with 8.1 at all, either from the media creation tool or from an image downloaded from the techbench website; will this work with his copy of windows 8.1 and if so (this next bit is from him, not me), is he locked to the pro version of windows 10 or can he do the free upgrade to the home edition

also, if he does this, will he get any little notification on his desktop/in windows of any sort telling him to get a valid key, or will it be as simple as "boot up media tool/windows iso, in-place upgrade, ???, profit!!!"

    Hey mate,

If you upgrade from an activated Windows 8.1 Pro, it will install and activate Windows 10 Pro.

To be extra safe, you can create a system image backup before doing the upgrade to have as fail safe to restore if needed.

ill most likely make a macrium reflect image of his setup, just to migrate to a new HDD I ordered for him. I would try to get him on an SSD/HDD(or SSHD) setup, but that would take -in his own words- "too much damn time, just get me a regular hard drive and that'll be all I need"

but still, if I do this in-place upgrade, will he get any little/annoying popup/notification of any sort saying he'll need a valid license key to register, or not? I think he won't, but he wants me to be damn sure of what he's going to get

Once you get it upgraded there will be no issues with windows asking anything about the license anymore.

If this has been asked already, forgive me for the repetition.
If I do a disk image with Windows 7, can it be reviewed/restored after upgrade to Windows 10?
