Import Windows XP Mode from Windows 7 to Windows 10

I made the Windows XP desktop larger by changing the screen resolution.

I don't like the way Windows XP captures the mouse (I need to work side by side in Windows XP and Windows 10 every day). Is there any way to stop this?

Before finding this page I originally tried a fresh download of XP Mode to Oracle Virtualbox (before realising it might stop working after 30 days, which is no use to me). Oracle Virtualbox didn't seem to capture the mouse, it worked better side-by-side with Windows 10 (more like Windows XP Mode + Windows 7 did).

I've now reverted to Oracle VirtualBox. Although this is described as more basic, it seems to handle working in Windows XP and Windows 10 side-by-side in a much intuitive way.

I was able to use the same VHD (created as per instructions in post 1 of this thread) into Oracle Virtualbox.

Once booted in VirtualBox, it did require a repeat of the telephone activation done last night in HyperV (it complained "you system has changed substantially since you activated it"), but I was able to do this by telephone as before.

What I mean by "side by side working more intuitive in VirtualBox" is this:

-- Hyper V captures the mouse and requires constant clicking on <Ctrl Alt RightArrow > to release it. There is an option to change these keystrokes, but only to other collections of three keys.

-- Oracle VirtualBox requires only <Right Ctrl> to release the mouse (or sometimes it doesn't seem to require anything, I can switch between Windows XP and the host operating system just by moving the mouse, the same as I could with XP Mode in Windows 7).

Is there any other reason I should be using HyperV not VirtualBox? Anything I'm going to find out later? My requirement is basic data entry .

My workflow is such that for 10 minutes each day, there are similar (but not identical!) data entries being made about the day's events in both an old program on XP and a newer program on Windows 10. Hence the need for intuitive switching between the two.

    PS

There seemed to be possible complications with having Oracle VirtualBox and HyperV on the same Windows 10 machine (not clear, conflicting information, I didn't have time to sort out) . So to be clear, I system restored to a state before I switched on HyperV, before re-using the earlier Disk2VHD copy of my old Win XP Mode in Oracle VirtualBox.

There should be a way to disable the hard capture of the mouse and make it more fluid, because back when I was using Hyper-V extensively, using dual monitors, I'd actually open a Remote Desktop to 2 running VMs, maximize each to one monitor, and flow fluidly between the 2. I could then minimize one of them and continue to flow fluidly between the Windows 10 host OS and the remaining VM - but as I remember it, there was a very specific setting I had to enable in order for this to work correctly.

I think (but don't have a VM to be sure) that it was the Integration Services, which you probably need to install in the XP BHD install. However, since Oracle works for you, cool.

I have also attempted to follow the tutorial, and did not have any success. I have now reverted back to windows 7 and will wait a few days, or until this weekend, to try again. The real headache in the process is the upgrade from W7 to W10 which takes hours.
For me, I do recall getting the "you must activate" message at least once -- but it could not do that since my XP_Mode did not include an internet connection. I never tried calling the number. Later on, it would let me sign on, then do some sort of dance that I could not catch involving a blue screen with writing, and tossing me back into the sign on prompt.
Some where along the way, I have even lost the XP_Mode drives that were connected to my Win7 machine. I'll have to figure that out first before I try again.
Nevertheless, thanks for the effort and I hope it works for others -- and eventually for me.

Sorry to hear you couldn't get it working.

I will do some more extensive testing this coming weekend. I need to start from scratch, first installing Windows 7 clean on a PC, activating it, installing XP Mode, exporting XP Mode VHD and finally upgrading to Windows 10.

I am optimistic, though. As @DParry told in this thread, he had no issues with the process, including phone activation, and was even able to move imported XP Mode VHD to VirtualBox.

I'll post here when I have something more to tell.

Reading over the tutorial again, I noticed the following statement:

On XP Mode virtual machine, download and run
    Disk2VHD (tutorial).

Is it important to download *on* the virtual machine? I downloaded on the Win7 host and put it into a directory that the virtual machine can read (via map network drive).

Yes, it is important to download and run it on the XP Mode VM.

That may be my problem then. I can run it on the xp vm, but I have not been able to download it there (at least not yet). I'll research trying to figure out how to fix that problem. I can browse the internet so I am connected, but for some reason the download site did not work for me on the vm.

    - - - Updated - - -

Turns out the reason the download site did not work on the VM was because my VM had *very* old versions of both IE and Chrome. I had to download and install a new Chrome, then copy the link to the download site. I then was able to download DISK2DVD.zip to my VM C: directory.

However, I then did a file comparison of the DISK2DVD.exe from that with the one I had gotten on my W7 machine, and they were identical.

This weekend I am going to make one more attempt at the process before I give it up. (run the disk2vhd on the VM, save the result on W7, upgrade to W10, then import that file into the Hyper VM creation process). I'll report back success or fail.

In my case it worked by downloading the Disk2VHD zip file to my Windows 7 PC, then copying it over my internal network to the XP Mode desktop and unzipping it there.

In the original post on this thread, I notice
1.3) When Disk2VHD has created the new virtual hard disk (VHD) file, copy it to your Windows 7 host.

which implies that the newly created VHD is initially saved on the XP Mode machine,

But in the referenced post on Disk2VHD, there is the warning
Do not save VHD to any of the drives included in VHD being created!

This may be worth emphasising in the original post. My XP Mode only had a C drive (typical?), so I initially saved the VHD of this C drive to itself. On the rerun of Disk2VHD I saved it across my internal network to a drive on Windows 7. (But I don't know if this actually made a difference.)

    Activation via Phone doesn't work

    Hello,

I followed the procedure and got to the Activation screen.
I called the phone number (in Belgium), could fill in all the numbers, but reply was that system was not able to produce a key.
Tried it 3 times, 3 times same answer.

Has microsoft changed it? Is there an alternative?

    Thx

it is really difficult to get XP Mode activated in Windows 10. Only alternatives are to find a valid XP Pro product key, or reinstall XP Mode once every month (XP has a 30-day grace period).
