XP VHD drive from windows 7 was installed on windows 10. As per somebody's suggestion, started in safe mode with command com. Then entered new XP Professional key using Internet. Now every time login XPMUser window, I get activation window message. I select to activate it. Then I get message on top left corner that windows has been activated. Click next. When I do it I get XPMUser login and activation message and it loops again. Only way XP would open up in safe mode with command com Prompt. Is there any suggestion?

Well I seem to have now activated Windows XP.

But I don't understand this at all. I telephoned the number given on the activation screen (in the UK), keyed the number shown on the screen into my telephone keypad, and then entered a number read back to me into Windows XP. At no point did I need an activation code (eg from a disk or the back of a PC).

The Windows XP desktop is a small box on the screen. I can enlarge the surroundings (black below), but not the Windows XP desktop (blue below). Is there any way to enlarge it?

Hi, its been a long time but could be helpful. You'll need vmguest.iso to install the drivers in your xlvm. This file is available from hyper-v server 2012, you can download it from microsoft site as an unlimited trial. Mount the iso downloaded, look for the file install.wim, open this file with 7zip and navigate thru windows /system32, there is a file named vmguest.iso, extract it and mount in your xp vm. Hope it helps

error message when starting the VM.

    Reviving the thread...

I have a XP VM running on a W7 notebook. The software we run was custom made and the developer disappeared long ago.
The moment this notebook fails... done.

I tried the tutorial and when I run the Virtual machine I get an "disk read error occurred" message.

I'm stuck and would really appreciate any help making this work.

    Thank you all.

    This starts really bad as
1.1) In Windows 7, start XP Mode virtual machine. On XP Mode virtual machine, download and run Disk2VHD (tutorial).
    gets me "disk2vhd isn't a valid win32 application".

I've thought of running from sysinternals but despite network configuration with valid IP/mask/gateway/DNS and being able to access everything locally, I can't access the internet and I don't see where I can edit anything on that matter.
