How to Change Window Text Color in Windows 10

The window text color is black by default in Windows 10. These windows include various classic Win32 system windows and dialogs such as File Explorer, Local Group Policy Editor, NotePad, Regsitry Editor, Run, Task Manager, WordPad, etc....

This tutorial will show you how to change the default window text color for your account in Windows 10.

This will not change the text color of all windows.

The window text color you set will only be applied to your current theme. If you change your theme, it will also change the window text color to what is set or saved for the selected theme.

EXAMPLE: Window text color when changed to "blue"

These are the system windows I found the text color change in so far. Please feel free to post a screenshot here of other windows you notice the text color change in.

    Here's How:

1 Press the Win + R keys to open Run, type regedit into Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

2 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors

3 In the right pane of the Colors key, double click/tap on the WindowText string value to modify it. (see screenshot above)

4 Enter the 3 Red Green Blue (ex: 0 0 255) numbers (see tip box below) for the color (ex: blue) you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

The default RGB value is 0 0 0 for the color black.

To find out the Red Green Blue (RGB) numbers for the custom color you want:

    A) Open Paint (mspaint.exe).

    B) Click/tap on the Edit colors button in the Home tab.

    C) Select a color, and adjust the color to what you want.

    D) The Red Green Blue numbers for the color will be at the bottom right corner of the Edit Colors dialog.

    E) When finished, you can close Edit Colors and Paint.

7 You may need to repeat this tutorial until you find a text color that looks good to you.

    That's it,
    Shawn

I'm trying to change the text color in inactive windows' title bar. I have set InactiveTitleText to 0 0 0 but it is grey, not black. What could I be doing wrong?

    Hello mate,

It's not you. The inactive window will fade its title bar and text making black look like grey.

You could also play with the inactive window title bar color below to help make the text stand out better.

Is there a way to disable this annoying behavior?

I spent quite a while playing around with AccentColorInactive and finally settled on F0F0F0. It helps a little, but not much. There really isn't anything that contrasts well with mid-scale grey.

I'm not aware of a way to stop it.

I set my active title bar to grey in the Personalization > Colors location.
Then I set the AccentColorInactive to 484848 in the registry. It came out looking like this.
It's hard to tell what you're seeing without a screen shot...
