Yep - I guess this is deliberate, like the hidden MSR partition. It was always annoying seeing it.

Also, in past, disabling sandbox used to make it disappear which gave illusion it was linked to sandbox somehow. Presence or not of Sandbox no longer affects visibility of portablebaselayer.

EDIT 1: just double-checked - removing Sandbox remove the drive from Minitool as well.

    EDIT 2:
just double-double-checked - adding Sandbox brings back the the drive in Minitool as well.

I kind of wonder if portablebaselayer is actually for sandbox and the 8GB Reserved Storage is another superhidden "drive"?

    What a FusterCluck!
Reserved storage is for extra space for windows update I believe and portablrbaselayer for Sandbox. Shows in my disk manager.

Is that 2004 as it seems to have changed?

You seem to be confirming my thought that it just coincidence that portablebaselayer is 8GB and people assume it is for Reserved Storage as that is defined as 8GB as well.

Yes it's 2004 and both show as using 8 gig.

    Ok now totally confused.

Do reserved storage and Sandbox make use of PBL?

I have it on one of my other Insider ring builds. I'm on RTM currently, but I recall it shows up in the Defrag/Optimize screen list, with some verbiage about cannot access or something. Can you look, please and verify or deny? Thanks.

So, it does show up there. Don't think it will let you Optimize it, though. Try, and see what message you get.

On 2002 IP version I have a reserved storage but on 2004 production don't have it. Use sandbox on both and have the PortableBaselayer showing on both.

Well.... all looks ok, I think they changed something in Optimize. Didn't used to be able to touch it. Not important. Thanks for the tests.
