I have just opened MS Word from installation via the method here with the XML you provided and the activation fails. It seems I have been given Office Pro Plus 2016 which my license is not valid for I have Office 365 Home.

    OK, tested. No issues.

Running the script, exactly the same script I posted for you, the install screen shows that only the selected apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) will be installed:

    Installation done:

I run an Office application, in my example case now Word, and sign in with my O365 Home account when the following screen is shown:
Custom install or change Microsoft Office with Office Deployment Tool-sign-o365.jpg

    and check the account status:

One more check, I will use Office License Management Tool (see this post) to check O365 license status. It shows my Office installation is licenced, and that the installed Office edition is Office Home Premium:

I repeated the test on one virtual and two physical computers. Script worked, all O365 installations were activated and licenced.

I cannot explain why you have activation issues.

Thank you or your effort with helping. I will try again another time and will just install using regular method for now as I have an SSD I don't wish to write to it too many times I've already uninstalled and installed Office 4 times this week. I don't understand how I ended up with Word Pro Plus how does the download switch in command prompt know which version to download, is it from the XML? I followed the tutorial from 4. apart from unblocking the tool as it wasn't needed it didn't say it was blocked?

Thank you for writing this up, it is has been really helpful for me to understand the entire process. I do have a couple of questions though. I have MAK licenses for Office. I understand that I need to include the MAK in the XML in order to download the installation files to local storage. However, I'm not sure about two things:

    1) When is license activated if the MAK is included in the XML? Is it activated upon installation or do I need to activate it after the installation?
    2) Are the downloaded installation files locked to that MAK or can I use one of our other volume licenses upon installation?

Thanks for your effort. I was searching everywhere. but here only saw very helpful kind words that someone is ready to help to customize the installation. I have office 2019 pro plus vol. I want to install only Word, excel, powerpoint and outlook. Kindly send me the configuration xml. I want to do the activation manually.

I am sorry but I can't do that for you, for two reasons. First, If you have a valid, legal Office 2019 ProPlus volume license subscription, you also have credentials to sign in to https://config.office.com

Second, to create the configuration file, a valid MAK key is required, and I am not willing to use one of mine.

I am sorry, I have somehow missed your post. My apologies for a delayed reply.

If Autoactivate is turned on, activation will happen at final stage of the installation. Otherwise it must be done when an Office application is launched first time.

No, they are not locked. You can manually edit the script and change key.

    Default File Format selection

    Thank you for this article.

I am in the process of creating a config file and there is now a new prompt at the end (~2.11) that asks for one to select the Default File Format. Choices are:
    • Keep Current format
    • Open Office XML format
    • Open Document format

Custom install or change Microsoft Office with Office Deployment Tool-format_selection.jpg
While I expect I don't want Open Document, not sure what I have currently installed or the practical differences between the first 2.

The link in the graphic goes here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dep...ile-format-oct
While it talks about the difference between XML and ODF it does not clearly address the first selection.

    Your wisdom is appreciated. Thanks!
