How to Hide or Show Windows Defender Notification Area Icon in Windows 10

    information   Information
Windows Defender helps protect your PC against malware (malicious software) like viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Malware can infect your PC without your knowledge: it might install itself from an email message, when you connect to the Internet, or when you install certain apps using a USB flash drive, CD, DVD, or other removable media. Some malware can also be programmed to run at unexpected times, not only when it's installed.

Windows Defender is included with Windows and helps keep malware from infecting your PC in two ways:
    • Providing real-time protection. Windows Defender notifies you when malware tries to install itself or run on your PC. It also notifies you when apps try to change important settings.
    • Providing anytime scanning options. Windows Defender automatically scans your PC for installed malware on a regular basis, but you can also start a scan whenever you want. Windows Defender automatically removes (or temporarily quarantines) anything that's detected during a scan.

This tutorial will show you how to hide or show the Windows Defender notification area icon on the taskbar for your account in Windows 10.

    warning   Warning
When you install some 3rd party antivirus (AV) programs, they may automatically turn off Windows Defender. In this case you will not be able to turn on Windows Defender again until the 3rd party AV program has been completely uninstalled.

Question: Windows Defender does show in my system tray when malware is detected, so will this tutorial make it show permanently? Also I unchecked the option to always show icons and notifications; will this affect Windows Defender from showing?

    Hello TON,

This tutorial basically adds the Windows Defender icon to run at startup so it will always show.

If you set to not always how all icons in the notification area, Windows Defender will be in the expansion menu of notification area icons instead.

Is there a way for the desktop context menu items from Windows Defender context menu - Add in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums to appear in here instead? So when I right click the defender icon in the notification area, I get 'Update', 'Quick Scan' etc. That will consolidate things nicely in one place..

    Hello Krytoned,

That would be great if so, but there's not a way to add them that I'm aware of.

Please send feedback to Microsoft for this requested feature to hopefully have it added one day.

Thanks Brink it works like a charm, now the icon shows on restart and I can update it when I choose rather than going to settings etc etc and it showing makes me feel like its doing something rather than chasing it down only to find the 'Scan Now' deal in orange staring me in the face....good job!
