How to Enable or Disable New Tab Page Material Design UI in Google Chrome

This tutorial is no longer valid in the latest Google Chrome.

Google Chrome has a new Material Design refresh UI. This new UI comes with many new changes such as round curved tabs, round edges of address bar, color changes, etc.

The new Material Design refresh UI has also been applied to the New Tab page with round edged search box and small website thumbnails with their favicons. You can also add and customize (edit) shortcuts and change the background on the New Tab page.

The new Material Design refresh UI doesn't get applied to the New Tab page if you selected to use the Bing search engine.

If you don't like the Material Design UI on the New Tab page in Chrome, you can set the New Tab Page Material Design UI experimental flag to disable it and restore the classic New Tab page.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the new Material Design UI on the New Tab page in Google Chrome for your account in Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.

    Here's How:

    1. Open Google Chrome.

    2. Copy and paste the link below into the address bar of Chrome, and press Enter.

    chrome://flags/#ntp-ui-md

    3. Select Default (enabled) or Disabled for what you want in the New Tab Page Material Design UI flag drop down menu. (see screenshot below)

    4. Click/tap on the RELAUNCH NOW button at the bottom to apply.

    That's it,

I've tried this setting but it just won't work for me. I also set chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md to Normal to show tabs in the old style. Is that why the new UI isn't displaying?

    Hello @Steve C,

I just tested with the chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md flag set to "Normal" and the New Tab Page Material Design UI flag in this tutorial set to "Default", and it's working for me.

Do you have any other flags set?

If you haven't already, see if toggling the search engine to say "Bing" and back to "Google" may help.

I've just been toggling those flags on/off and I now have the old style tabs but the new UI style elsewhere.

No. When I restarted Chrome I have the old style tabs and old UI despite enabling chrome://flags/#ntp-ui-md

I must admit that I'm not sure why you don't see the new UI without any other flags set.

See below the flags I've set and the Chrome page as displayed. I see the old style tabs but not the new style UI.

Setting the New Tab Page Material Design UI flag back to "Default" should allow it.

It is basically working now but there is a weird problem. I've set the new tab page to Google which shows this correctly:

However, when I start Chrome I've set up to go to Google which displays in the old UI style. It also does this when I select Home which is also set to Google. That's what's been confusing me. Is this a bug?
