How to Change Send to Desktop (create shortcut) Icon in Windows

The Send to context menu makes it easy for you to quickly send a copy of items (ex: files, folders, libraries) to Bluetooth device, Compressed (zipped) folder, Desktop (create shortcut), Documents, Fax recipient, Mail recipient, and removable and network drives.

This tutorial will show you how to change the icon for the Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) context menu item to any icon for your account or all users in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

    Contents

    • Option One: Change Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) Icon for Current User
    • Option Two: Change Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) Icon for All Users

EXAMPLE: Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) default icon
Change Send to Desktop (create shortcut) Icon in Windows-send_to_context_menu.jpg

    OPTION ONE

Change Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) Icon for Current User

This option will override Option Two.[/I]

This option will only be applied to the current user, and no other user account on the PC.

1 Press the Win + R keys to open Run, type regedit into Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

2 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}\DefaultIcon

If you do not have a {9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE} key, right click on the CLSID key, click/tap on New, click/tap on Key, type {9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE} for the name, and press Enter.

If you do not have a DefaultIcon key, right click on the {9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE} key, click/tap on New, click/tap on Key, type DefaultIcon for the name, and press Enter.

3 In the right pane of the DefaultIcon key, double click/tap on the (Default) string value (REG_SZ) to modify it. (see screenshot above)

4 Type the full path of the .ico file wrapped in quotes you want to use for the icon, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

    The default icon is: %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-110

5 You can now close Registry Editor if you like.

6 Restart the explorer process or sign out and sign in to apply.

    OPTION TWO

Change Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) Icon for All Users

You must be signed in as an administrator to do this option.[/I]

If any user uses Option One, it will override this option for their account.

1 Press the Win + R keys to open Run, type regedit into Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

2 If you used Option One, delete the DefaultIcon key located below. (see screenshots below)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}\DefaultIcon

3 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}\DefaultIcon

Change Send to Desktop (create shortcut) Icon in Windows-all_users_send_to_desktop_icon.jpg

4 Change the owner of the DefaultIcon key to the Administrators group.

5 Change the permissions of the DefaultIcon key to "Allow" Administrators "Full control" of it.

6 In the right pane of the DefaultIcon key, double click/tap on the (Default) string value (REG_SZ) to modify it. (see screenshot above)

7 Type the full path of the .ico file wrapped in quotes you want to use for the icon, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

The .ico file will need to be saved at a location (ex: "C:\Windows" or "C:\Users\Public") that all users have access to. If it's not, the icon may show as a default folder for some users instead.

    The default icon is: %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-110

Change Send to Desktop (create shortcut) Icon in Windows-edit.png

8 You can now close Registry Editor if you like.

9 Restart the explorer process or sign out and sign in to apply.

    That's it,
    Shawn

On my right click context menu I have also " Include in Library " so you can send to the libraries
and I asked if I can apply this manipulation to change icons of the different libraries
I saw the tutorials for all the items in "send to" and hope to apply them soon
as a matter of fact, I bought a new surface pro 7 and I am customizing windows as usual

and your forum is the best place for all the tutorials and helps

You could use an option in the tutorial below to change the icon of a library that should also be applied in that context menu.

    Hello,
I have already changed library icons with this tutorial : change folder icons in this Pc, in fact the folders are the libraries
but it don`t apply to the right click menu
same with "send to" the documents icon ( already changed as library folder) is not applied
so I understand that the same folder can have several representative icon
ex: let take my document folder, I have change it already with a personal icon, but in the right click menu this is still the original icon
I hope you understand me as my english is poor
my conclusion is that the same folder can have different icon , depends where he stand
in this pc we change the document folder in regedit, and in the right click "send to" the document icon we change also in regedit but not in the same place
meaning that we have two different tutorial for the same folder but in different places

Please Mr Brink, if you think there is no interest in my explanation than just don`t answer to it as maybe I am wrong all the way

    Claude,

In that case, please go ahead and create a new thread in the custom forum area for this specific item to see what we can do to help.
