Maybe I spoke too soon. Just went to Network again, can't even see the other machine. What could have happened?

    Sorry to hear that.

Please provide more details about how your network is connected, and what OS is running on each computer.

As a test, are you able to manually map a network location to have it show?

One is a laptop running Windows 10 Home, on WIFI; this is the machine with the directory I wish to share to the other machine.
The other is a desktop running Windows 10 Pro, on ethernet.
In Network on the laptop I can see:
    - the desktop machine and the its Users/Public
    - the laptop and the folder I have shared
    - the printer and the router
In Network on the desktop machine I can only see the printer

Does it matter who I am logged in as?

And, yes, on the laptop I am able to map a network drive for the folder in question, so that it shows on the laptop.

And further, the laptop is running version 1803, the desktop is running 1809.

At least you can map the network folder for now as a workaround.

You would want to be signed in to the account that has share permissions for the network folder.

    I don't understand.
As I said, there is a folder on the laptop that I want to access from the desktop machine, but I cannot even see the laptop from the desktop machine, let alone see the mapped drive, or the folder itself.

Sorry, I misunderstood for the mapping bit.

Let's see some screenshots of all your sharing settings from the laptop to see if anything may stand out. Be sure to black out any personal details in it.

If you have a home network all connected via a router, then also check your router settings to make sure connected devices are able to see each other.

OK, but it won't be for a while, I have to be away for a couple of days now.

    Hey Brink,
Another great tutorial! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm new to file sharing and I have a couple of dumb questions for you, if you're still following this thread.
    1. I have two computers connected (via wireless) to my router at home. One PC is Windows Vista (SP2), the other is Windows 10 Home (version 1809).
    2. I have 3 or 4 folders on the Windows Vista PC that I want to share, so they're accessible from the Win10 PC.
    3. The Windows Vista PC network settings are: Workgroup= HOUSE. Network Location type= Public with Network Discovery "On" and File Sharing "On".
    4. The Win10 PC network settings are: Workgroup= WORKGROUP. Network Location type= Public with Network Discovery "Off" and File Sharing "Off".

I understand your tutorial, but I have 3 questions:
    1. Do both PCs need to belong to the same "Workgroup" (either HOUSE or WORKGROUP, but not both)?
    2. Do both PCs need to have the same Network Location "type" (either Public or Private) as long as Network Discovery and File Sharing are turned "On" for the computer (Vista) that has the folder to share?
    3. If my Network Location type "Public" is set with Network Discovery "On" and File Sharing "On", do those settings apply to every network connection that I make when I choose Public as the type? (At Starbucks, McDonalds, etc.?)

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it very much.

    Hello @TobyMeister Toby,

I find file sharing works best when all computers are on the same workgroup and network location, but only the same network location alone is fine.

You'lll need to turn on SMB1 in Windows 10 since your sharing with Vista.
