Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10  

One is a laptop running Windows 10 Home, on WIFI; this is the machine with the directory I wish to share to the other machine.
The other is a desktop running Windows 10 Pro, on ethernet.
In Network on the laptop I can see:
- the desktop machine and the its Users/Public
- the laptop and the folder I have shared
- the printer and the router
In Network on the desktop machine I can only see the printer

Does it matter who I am logged in as?

And, yes, on the laptop I am able to map a network drive for the folder in question, so that it shows on the laptop.

And further, the laptop is running version 1803, the desktop is running 1809.

I don't understand.
As I said, there is a folder on the laptop that I want to access from the desktop machine, but I cannot even see the laptop from the desktop machine, let alone see the mapped drive, or the folder itself.

OK, but it won't be for a while, I have to be away for a couple of days now.

Another great tutorial! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm new to file sharing and I have a couple of dumb questions for you, if you're still following this thread.
1. I have two computers connected (via wireless) to my router at home. One PC is Windows Vista (SP2), the other is Windows 10 Home (version 1809).
2. I have 3 or 4 folders on the Windows Vista PC that I want to share, so they're accessible from the Win10 PC.
3. The Windows Vista PC network settings are: Workgroup= HOUSE. Network Location type= Public with Network Discovery "On" and File Sharing "On".
4. The Win10 PC network settings are: Workgroup= WORKGROUP. Network Location type= Public with Network Discovery "Off" and File Sharing "Off".

I understand your tutorial, but I have 3 questions:
1. Do both PCs need to belong to the same "Workgroup" (either HOUSE or WORKGROUP, but not both)?
2. Do both PCs need to have the same Network Location "type" (either Public or Private) as long as Network Discovery and File Sharing are turned "On" for the computer (Vista) that has the folder to share?
3. If my Network Location type "Public" is set with Network Discovery "On" and File Sharing "On", do those settings apply to every network connection that I make when I choose Public as the type? (At Starbucks, McDonalds, etc.?)
