I got the old drive working for now and disabled driver download. When I did a repair install, the updates replaced the driver. Next time, I will do updates after the repair so I have time to disable the driver download before doing the updates. Windows 10 is giving me an education....

I will try these options Brink! It is an intermittent issue and disabling in device manager did not work in the past. My computer does not show the option to disable driver downloads in WU/advanced settings. Slowing cursor speed did help but it comes back from time to time. Thanks!

Yeah, that setting left Settings in build 15019, but you can still use Option 2 below to set it via .reg file.

I will do so. You provide a great forum/service. Thank you!!! It has been said one should only get OEM system drivers so I refuse to update drivers elsewhere but MS insists on doing so. Their attitude has changed little since the Netscape lawsuit! I like Win 10 but MS just keeps making it harder for us to control what they force feed us. I wish I could just install security updates. Now after each CU is installed I have zero history of updates and I have to reset/rebuild my network. I have turned off WAU before to stop the madness. Thanks again Brink!

In Windows 10 1809, the setting is stored in
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad
    Value: LeaveOnWithMouse
    Type: REG_DWORD
    0 - off
    0xffffffff - on

You must logoff and log back in to apply the changes.

    Thank you @Bangaio.

The .reg files in option 2 had the correct key and value, but I didn't have it correct in the notes until now.

Hi, just noted something unexpected- this laptop did not have these options with the default touchpad driver installed:

    - but now it does.

A while back I tried installing a precision touchpad driver which worked but lacked most of the options provided by the manufacturer's driver. I uninstalled it.

I've just discovered that those settings added by the precision driver as shown above remain, even though I'm now using the default driver.
