I have already tried that and it didn't work.

answers.microsoft.com has suggested I do this: How to: Perform a Repair Upgrade Using the Windows 10 ISO file. The reply said I will not loose my apps or data.

    Thanks for the reply Brink.

Yes, a repair install should fix it without losing anything.

I did the reinstall and it worked! It was very easy although it took a long time to download the files to my USB disk. I wanted to install from media not just the internet as that can fail at any time.

I downloaded the reinstall setup program from Download Windows 10

I didn't loose any programs or files as far as I can tell but did have to change a drive letter for an exernal drive that I use back to what it was before. I used Disk Management which can be found by searching the Control Panel for "format hard disk".

    Thanks everyone for your help!

Hi Brink, I tried both options (importing the file and the CMD command) and the Power Options in Control Panel just shows the Balanced plan. In a second attempt I ended up with three power plans all showing "Balanced", so I ended up running your suggested "Restore Default Schemes" CMD command which returned my laptop to the original state (single Balanced plan). Thanks for any feedback.

    Hello @antares,

If Power Options was open, close and reopen it to apply.

If that didn't make any difference for you, then go ahead and post some screenshots of your command prompt and Power Options to see if anything may stand out.

Hi Brink, sorry for my late reply, been busy, I tried all methods (importing files, and using powershell as administrator) with no success, only "Balanced" plan shows. I also tried manually creating High and Ultimate Performance plans, but it just creates a clone of the Balanced settings. Here are some screenshots of the current state of my laptop (the second image shows the displayed battery icon info in System Tray, which I set to Best Performance)

    Hello @antares,

Selecting "Best performance" for your Power mode level is essentially the same as selecting to use the "High Performance" power plan.

As a test, what happens when you create a custom power plan using the same name as the power plan you wanted?

Hi Brink, as I mentioned in my previous post, when I manually create a custom plan, even if I name it as the plan I intend (High Performance or Ultimate Performance), it will just replicate all settings I already have in the Balanced plan.

Yes, but does it have the correct default description for the power plan in Power Options?

The settings can be changed to what you want for it afterwards.
