How to Add or Remove "Dim display after" from Power Options in Windows

The Dim display after setting in Power Options allows users to specify how long in minutes your computer is inactive before the display dims. This setting applies only to portable computers (ex: laptop or tablet) that support Windows control of the brightness level of an integrated display device.

If you did not originally have the Dim display after setting available, then it means it is not supported on your computer. Instead, the display will automatically dim by the set Dimmed display brightness percentage exactly 10 seconds before the specified Turn off display after time.

If Dim display after is set to 0 minutes, then the display will not dim.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Dim display after setting under Display in Power Options for all users in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove this setting in Power Options.

Hello, I have tried both methods, and verified I was in elevated mode when running the CLI command, but I'm not having any luck with "Dim Display After" showing up. Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hello,

If you did not originally have the Dim display after setting available, then it means it is not supported on your computer. Instead, the display will automatically dim by the set Dimmed display brightness percentage exactly 10 seconds before the specified Turn off display after time.

Hello Brink, thank you for the response. I have the "Turn off display after" setting set to "Never". Any suggestions?

Just to verify, is the display being turned off or just dimming?

When is this happening? For example, on the lock screen, sign-in screen, or in Windows while idle after how much time.

For now, check using the tutorial below to see if may be from adaptive brightness.

    Hello,

It just dims the screen. I can shake the mouse or window and the screen will brighten up again. This happens while in Windows and I haven't been able to nail down the timing exactly, but it feels like it's anywhere between 5-10 minutes.

In a thread I started prior to posting in this thread, I was asked to collect PowerCfg settings, which I'll post below. If the "Setting Index" value is equivalent to seconds, then I'd guess the timers are AC - 6.25 minutes and DC - 4.125 minutes.

    Subgroup GUID: 7516b95f-f776-4464-8c53-06167f40cc99 (Display)
    GUID Alias: SUB_VIDEO
Power Setting GUID: 17aaa29b-8b43-4b94-aafe-35f64daaf1ee (Dim display after)
    GUID Alias: VIDEODIM
    Minimum Possible Setting: 0x00000000
    Maximum Possible Setting: 0xffffffff
    Possible Settings increment: 0x00000001
    Possible Settings units: Seconds
Current AC Power Setting Index: 0x00000375
Current DC Power Setting Index: 0x00000249

Sorry, I meant to reply back in my previous post. Yes, I tried the adaptive brightness option, but the option didn't result in being visible in my power plan advanced options.

I just configured the AC/DC power settings in all 3 of my power policies (Power Saver, Balanced and High Performance) to 0x00000000 and will keep an eye on this to see if my screen dims after making this update.

Update: After changing the config on all 3 power profiles, my screen still dims after inactivity.

Here are my settings for each profile:

I have replied to all this back in your original thread.

But I do not understand why you could not get this item or the adaptive brightness one to appear in your Power options.

    @ninicp,

Adding to what Denis posted in your other thread, check to see if you may have some OEM or driver software installed that may also be controlling your power management or graphics with its own screen dim or power saving setting.
