    Brink,

The C: drive is a M2 SSD. The E: drive is a data SSD which is connected to SATA port 1. The DVD drive is connected to SATA port 2. If I disconnect the E: drive and D: drive, restart, Windows assigns the C: drive Disk 0. When I connect the E: and D: drives, restart, Windows moves the C: drive to Disk 1.

If you look at the partitions on the C: drive System Reserved is listed first without a drive letter, the Boot/Page partition is listed second with C: drive letter and the EFI/System partition is last with no drive letter.

If the System Reserved partition could be moved in the second or third in order, moving the Boot/Page partition with the C: drive letter in the first position, would Windows assign the C: drive back to Disk 0?

    Thanks,
    Mark

Moving the System Reserved partition would have no affect on the Disk #. Attempting to do so could also mess up the boot configuration and/or Windows.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. The Disk # is just a reference for which SATA port the disk is connected to. It has no affect on Windows other than the reference.

If wanted, you could try connecting the SSD to SATA port 3 or higher.

    Brink,

Thank you again for your help. I'm going to leave it as is, the system boots and runs fine.

My brother will never go into Disk Management. Everything looks normal in This PC Devices and Drives.

    Cheers,
    Mark

    I suggest an amendement
Windows reserves the drive letters A and B for floppy drives
Windows used to reserve the drive letters A and B for floppy drives but has not done so for several Windows generations. Both A and B can be assigned to external drives such as a permanently-connected SD card in a built-in yet hardly-ever-used SD card reader. This works in WinXP onwards.

    Hello Denis,

This would have to be done manually correct?

I don't think Windows will automatically assign A or B. At least it hasn't yet for me.

I have my DvD manually set as drive B since don't really use it much. A drive I use for Flash drives.

    Hi,
    Thanks for this wonderful tutorial!
I made an in-place upgrade from win 8 ( UEFI ) to win 10 ( UEFI ). The EFI Partition was always mounted with a drive letter in This PC folder. It showed in Disk Management but without any drive letter.
I was able to Remove Drive Letter with Diskpart command line but the partition will be mounted back on restart. Then OPTION 3 came to my rescue.
