Probably best to integrate the drivers into the wim image. Easily done with dism++.
for the standard ms boot.wim integrate them into image 2.
winre.wim has only 1 image so obviously it goes into image 1.

My problem is I can't get to the part to create a windows image unless I know which volume/disk it is
Boot into your windows installation.
Use dism++ to mount boot.wim from your installation media stick/recovery media usb stick
integrate the F6 drivers
save image
unmount image
Then you will be able to see the target disk when you boot the media
screenshots of the process. In your case you are integrating drivers into boot.wim. The process is the same.
If the boot.wim has 2 images, select image 2

Did you read the dell link?
Path: IRST\F6\VMD\f6vmdflpy-x64
In ye olden days pressing F6 would bring up the load driver screen. So storage media drivers intended for bootable media are often called F6 drivers and will be in the F6 folder.
Yes, I read the Dell link, but not every word/character as wasn't at the stage to follow it through.
Thanks for the clarification
Loading them on the fly is sometimes called F6ing.
But because you might want to boot your recovery media more than once, it is best to integrate them.
I think I have 1904 x64 fancy winpe somewhere which has them already in.
You can borrow it
