You need to set the description for the captured image.

The imagex.exe is part of the Deployment Tools found in the Windows ADK for Windows 10.

Description is not necessary, it is only needed when WIM file contains more than one Windows edition, to let user to choose which edition to install.

In this recovery partition process, description can be added but it is not required. Missing description is not the cause for Windows Setup not finding any editions.

Yes you are correct Kari. @Mastermindj3 posted a screenshot of the error while trying to install the captured image on a virtual machine, the Windows Setup window gives a blank option when the description is not set.

The fact that description is not set has nothing to do with Windows Setup not finding any Windows editions in WIM image when user boots from custom recovery partition. The only purpose of the description is to let user to select what edition to install in normal clean install.

However, this method creates a WIM image with only only edition, index 1. It will be the same edition than the edition the WIM was captured from. That edition will be automatically installed from custom recovery partition. User will not be asked about which edition should be installed, therefore the description is unnecessary. It does no harm, of course, but it will not be required in this case.

I repeat: missing description has absolutely nothing to do with Windows Setup not finding a valid Windows image in WIM file, when Windows Setup is run from custom recovery partition created as told in this tutorial. Description for each edition in WIM image is only required when performing a normal clean install, booting from Windows install media instead of custom recovery partition.

You need the files from the windows install media, which is best put on a USB stick. Should point out here that the USB stick needs to be a sizable one as the captured install.wim will be quite large in GB terms, mine was 15GB.

You then mount the iso on the USB stick, right click and mount, and navigate to the source folder.

Navigate to the install.wim, or install.esd file, as you have created the media using the media creation tool, and replace it with the install.wim file you created from your capture.

Then follow the rest of the tut to create your recovery partition.
