Set Disk Cleanup to Have All Items Checked or Unchecked by Default in Windows 10

This tutorial no longer works starting with at least Windows 10 version 1903.

As a workaround for now, you can run the command below to open Clean Manager with all items checked by default.

    cleanmgr /D C /LOWDISK

For a shortcut: How to Create Disk Cleanup All Items Checked Shortcut in Windows 10

You can use Disk Cleanup on a regular basis to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your drives, which can free up drive space and help your PC run better. It can delete temporary files and system files, empty the Recycle Bin, and remove a variety of other items that you might no longer need.

Disk Cleanup will already have items to delete checked and unchecked by default. You may want to have all items checked or unchecked by default instead.

This tutorial will show you how to have all items checked or unchecked by default in Disk Cleanup for all users in Windows 10.

Users will still be able to manually check or uncheck items in Disk Cleanup.

You must be signed in as an administrator to set Disk Cleanup to have all items checked or unchecked.

    Here's How:

    1. Do step 2 (default), step 3 (all unchecked), or step 4 (all checked) below for what you would like to do.

     2. To Set Disk Cleanup to have Default Items Checked and Unchecked

    This is the default setting.

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

    Windows_10_Disk_Cleanup_default_checked_unchecked_items.reg

    Download

     3. To Set Disk Cleanup to have All Items Unchecked by Default

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

    Windows_10_Disk_Cleanup_uncheck_all_items_by_default.reg

    Download

     4. To Set Disk Cleanup to have All Items Checked by Default

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

    Windows_10_Disk_Cleanup_check_all_items_by_default.reg

    Download

    5. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

    6. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

    7. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

    8. If you like, you can now delete the downloaded .reg file.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn,

First of all let my thank you for another great tutorial!!!

I did a comparison of the provided in the tutorial .reg files, with the entries in my registry and I have found some differences in Keys and default values.
I thought that it might be worth checking if something has changed since the tutorial date and you might wanna update the .reg files, if needed.

The differences I found are included in this DiskCleanup Comparison.pdf

    Take care! :)

    Thank you Dimitri. :)

I've updated the .reg files for what you have. I didn't have any of the game entries in my registry though.

For someone who never plays games on a PC, I was surprised that I had the Games entries too! Anyway, I'm glad I could be of any help!

    Hello John,

I suppose it depends on if you want all items to be deleted or not at shutdown.

@Brink I have noticed Disk Cleanup(1809) have two new registry keys.

    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\DownloadsFolder]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Language Pack]
