How to Enable or Disable Timeline in Windows 10

Timeline is now available in Windows 10 starting with build 17063.

It can be difficult to get back to stuff you were working on in the past. You might sometimes forget which site or app you were using or where you saved a file. Now you can finally close apps without worrying—with Timeline, you can get right back to where you left off.

Timeline introduces a new way to resume past activities you started on this PC, other Windows PCs, and iOS/Android devices. Timeline enhances Task View, allowing you to switch between currently running apps and past activities.

In Timeline, a user activity is the combination of a specific app and a specific piece of content you were working on at a specific time. Each activity links right back to a webpage, document, article, playlist, or task, saving you time when you want to resume that activity later.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the Timeline feature in Task View for all accounts on a Windows 10 PC.

You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable Timeline.

Disabling Timeline will clear the activity history of all users from the PC.

Timeline requires the Windows Search service to be enabled, running, and set to Automatic (Delayed Start).

Starting in July 2021, if you have your activity history synced across your devices through your Microsoft account (MSA), you'll no longer have the option to upload new activity in Timeline. You'll still be able to use Timeline and see your activity history (information about recent apps, websites and files) on your local device. AAD-connected accounts won't be impacted.

Chrome isnt showing up in my timeline and as I use it for work, it would be very useful. Would restarting this help?

    Hey Nick, :)

I wouldn't think it would help.

It could be an issue with Chrome not working properly with it yet for you.

The latest version of Chrome is showing in my timeline though.

I never had Chrome show up. I ended up disabling Timeline due to HIPAA concerns (use my laptop at work in the hospital).

If you get Chrome to show up, let me know. I may enable it on my personal account.

I've heard of HIPAA through my work in hospital data.

Is there a way to customize what appears in Timeline?

Could this mean that there might be some way to customize what shows up in timeline, and a way to exclude some apps/activities from being reported in Timeline?

Hello Joe, and welcome to Ten Forums.

I'm currently not aware of a way to exclude anything from Timeline.

The latest is that it worked when I put an imgur link on skype today but none of the links that I entered directly into Chrome throughout the day have shown up.
