How to Add or Remove 'Link State Power Management' from Power Options in Windows 10

Link State Power Management is a part of the PCI Express Power Management Settings in Power Options that allows users to specify the Active State Power Management (ASPM) policy to use for capable links when the link is idle.

The link state of a PCIe device is converted from L0 (on) to L1 (off) when the link is not transferring data. The hardware is automatically converted to L0 again when data is available to transfer across the link.

There are basically 2 levels of power management in the PCI Express options. The difference between these 2 options are the power savings versus the latency (Time to recover from the Sleep state).

Users can specify the following ASPM policies below:

Off = Turn off ASPM for all links.

Moderate power savings = The system attempts to use the L0 state when the link is idle.

Maximum power savings = The system attempts to use the L1 state when the link is idle.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Link State Power Management setting under PCI Express in Power Options for all users in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove this setting in Power Options.

    why to remove the option?
i still have to understand which one is the best.. off, moderate, maximum. i can't understand if this occurs from SLEEP mode to return wake mode, or in which other moment. i've always used MAXIMUM..... and i use a fixed pc with ryzen 1600 and gtx 1060. online there are not so many sites that explains which setting is preferable, someone says that it's better to set OFF for better compatibility.... (but compatibility with what?)

You may want to remove it if you want to help prevent other users from changing this setting, or you just want to remove settings you don't change to clean it up.

I'd say use the setting that works best for you after testing each.

    for information

I disable "Link State Power Management" in Windows
and also "PCI Express Native Power Management" in the bios

the above settings solve my nvidia drivers crashing (bsod) at low load or after resuming from sleep

Hello archerart, and welcome to Ten Forums.

I looked, but didn't see these available in Power Options. Which specific setting is this for if known?

it is like the ability to turn off power of the device
i will explain to you sir
you can do this steps with me to know what i am talking about
if you open your device manger and go to the network adapters and disable the LAN card you will see that the device is completely shut down and has zero power state and even the lights at the back of your PC case are shut down

but when you have two graphics card and you want to shut down one of them to preserve your PC life span what happen it is still produce heat and his light wont even turned off

so i looked in to it and i figured out that graphics card are in the d3hot state or low power state not like the network adapters LAN device which are go to d3cold state zero power
if we managed to add another power plan to the pcie lane then we will make our graphics card totally disabled if we want because it has no power on it and when we want we will open our graphics card when we do some heavy graphics things
and this link will help you to see what i am talking about

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface - Wikipedia

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...port-interface

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...ions-to-d3cold

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...d3cold_support

disable our pcie for every day use and increase our power on party times

maybe from outer software if we couldn't do it on windows power plans or maybe if you know some one work good on Linux i hear that they cut off power completely of their graphics card is this right sir can you ask Linux friend of yours to check this information and is it right or wrong

if you think with me who benefits from keep running our PC all the time the motherboard and graphics company to shorten their life spans so we would buy another and another PC but if we do this simple tricks we wont have to do this
    thank you

    @archerart,

I searched through all the available power options, but do not see any for this to make show.

I suppose, you could just shut down (power off) the computer when not needed if you don't need to power it on/off often throughout the day.

Hello, is it possible to switch between the "Off", "Moderate power savings", "Maximum power savings" options using powercfg?
