Facebook suffers worldwide outage

This just gets funnier the more we learn. Apparently the length of the outage was in part due to the engineers being locked out of their own server rooms.

...Facebook’s seemingly accidental and sudden withdrawal of BGP routes to its own DNS servers, causing look-ups for Facebook domain names, such as facebook.com and instagram.com, to fail when those servers vanished from the internet.

This not only brought down Facebook's empire of apps but also apparently even caused door keycards to stop working on Facebook's campus.

I don't use it but my wife does. We have 16 grandkids and a half dozen great grand kids. All are just a phone call away, but she likes looking at the videos and pictures posted by the parents etc. It's a big part of her day catching up on what's going on with all of them. And only a few live close enough to drop by to say hi.
I'm not defending Facebook, I personally want nothing to do with it. But I'm the one that has to deal with it when it doesn't work.

Another major outage that could be a DDoS attack nationwide. A lot of packet loss before 5 PM EST today.

Downdetector showed a major spike before 5-ish.
