California Confusing Energy Law May Have Taken Away Your Gaming PC

You probably thought you were done with brain-jarring algebra and trigonometry from your school days but that may not be the case, thanks to some legal lunacy out of California. New energy efficiency regulations, which went into effect on July 1st and have been adopted by five other US states, limit the amount of power desktop computers can draw in a year based on their components and expandability. Due to this, PC manufacturers are scrambling, gamers are up in arms, and everyone is confused by the math at hand.

    Hi,
    Not really confusing
California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington due to power consumption regulations adopted by those states," the website says. "Any orders placed that are bound for those states will be canceled.

Not confusing at all, these regulations determine the rating of devices on standby or sleep, nothing to do with when they are performing. Manufacturers and system integrators have had several years to comply with these regulations ready for when they came into effect. These regulations only apply to pre-builds and the higher performing/ more expandable devices have a bigger allowance, SFF builds have tighter allowances.
Jayztwocents has a video explaining all this for those who cannot comprehend the "confusing" nature of these regulations.

    Hi there.

Even the most hungry PC consumes almost zero energy compared to Coal mine producers of energy like China and India (which the rest of the world is still being encouraged to trade with) and in any case if Electricity is produced "Green" does it matter how much is consumed. As far as I know nobody has suggested powering down the SUN etc.

Let's get Real about sensible climate change - a few thousand PC's running extreme Games aren't going to make any difference to Climate change -- maybe a few million less Mac burgers and other hideous fast take away foods wrapped in plastic might help but Sensible climate policies please. All these rubbish laws just irritate people, don't help the climate cause and turn people against sensible policies.

In any case some of these Gamers are really helpful in modelling or predicting future climate trends on their PC games anyway - so go on "peeps" - continue using your PC's and just treat some of those ignorant people with the contempt they deserve.

(From somebody coming from one of the Greenest and most environmental friendly countries on Earth BTW !!!!).

    Cheers

I suppose that they will also have to Block the shipment of parts that can be used by citizens to build their own gaming machine. This is Just plain nonsense.

It's climate change lunacy at its best! It would benefit all to come to a deeper understanding of electricity, electricity generation, electrical power usage, electricity requirements on a per country basis, and electricity delivery/distribution. The uninformed are making these lunatic laws while the masses stand around with their hands in their pockets not knowing what is going on.

Outlaw gangs of geeks will be buying them out of state and selling them on the black market. They’ll have to scratch off the service tags so they can’t be traced. This will not end well.
