New 11th Gen Intel Core S-series 'Rocket Lake-S' desktop processors

Short lived or not, my brand spanking new Rocket Lake PC is all done and she's running great. Needed to build something because my last build was in 2014. Built several machines for other people, just not myself. But there are always lots of small upgrades to bleed the wallet dry like SSDs, more RAM, printers, etc.

May have to to build an Alder Lake based system when that comes out but for now I'm very happy with this.

Sigh. Having a computer habit is even more expensive than a drug habit.

My thinking was that there will always be something better and faster within a few months, so I don't even try to have the absolute fastest. I go for what is a good bang for the buck and I was able get to some great deals on parts for my rig so that's what I went with.

Meanwhile, I ran into an interesting issue on this build. I've been building PCs since the mid '80s and this was a new one on me.

When I would boot this new system I would sometimes hear an odd sound on startup but it would go away within a few seconds. Finally figured it out....

I have a fan all the way at the back of the case exhausting air to the outside. This fan is behind the CPU cooler. Nothing odd, I build like that pretty much every time. However, in this instance, I have one of those super large Noctua CPU coolers and one of the fans on it is only about an inch and a half in front of rear fan.

Ever been a car at highway speed and you roll down a single window and you get that wild buffeting sound in the car? If you then open a second window the problem goes away. That's what I was getting. The relative speed of the fan on the CPU cooler vs the fan on the rear was causing buffeting. All it took was a simple fan speed tweak and problem resolved. Still, it took me a little while to figure that out.

Yeah, that's exactly how I build my systems as well. I almost always shoot for at least 1 level down from top of the line intentionally. Because in 2-3 years time, the slightly lower tier and the upper most tier are going to both be just as obsolete.

Got my Intel 10700 System built June 2020, a Few More upgrades, and should last me til at least 2022-2023, or maybe 2024. All really need to get upgraded is the Intel Stock CPU Cooler Shop used on the Intel 10700 Processor, and get a decent 3rd party after market liquid AIO or Air Cooler installed, and take full advantage of all the speed this Processor has.

Video card will have to be happy with my Geforce 1660 Super for a while, can't afford the newer RTX cards i'd like to have lol

Rocketlake i think i'm gonna skip this Generation, unless Shop offers to upgrade it when i get the Cooler installed by them in the future

Obsolete after 2-3 years guess my 12-13 year old q9550 past obsolete but still makes a darn fine media center with a 980ti lol

I'm amazed at how well older systems still run. Back in the early days of Windows, it seemed like you were constantly forced into buying new hardware just to be able to run a new version of Windows at all. For the most part, that has not been the case in quite a while now. There are some exceptions, of course, but I'm talking in general terms.
