It's always good to keep chips from overheating...but unless you are trying to overclock them to the very end, it's not really necessary to keep them as cool as possible. It's not going to matter if you idle at 42c or 36c over the life of the processor. It will be fine either way.

No. If a modern Intel CPU runs idle at 36°C, then, depending on the heat transfer rate inherent of the CPU cooler used, and also depending on how exactly it is being restricted─or may be restricted depending on various differences between various different system builds─by the CPU fan controller mechanism's behavior/plan, in concert with the related characteristic of airflow intake/ambient temperature, Intel Speed Shift can potentially sustain the higher clock rate for a longer time interval when compared to running idle at 42°C. The concept of necessarily always requiring the capability to keep running at max power for prolonged periods of time is outdated for the fact there exist other areas besides heavy duty OC'ing where idle temperatures can play an interesting part: the area of performance related factors vs added factors such as portability/size, quietness, and cost. You'd think that nobody really cares about size and portability when talking about desktop builds, but reality is different.

I thought seriously about getting an Intel 11900K processor but after reading the reviews I have concerns about the efficiency of this CPU. The power usage and temperatures are at the upper end of the scale. Also the Z590 boards which have some nice features are brand new so will potentially have teething troubles for 6 months or so.

So instead I'm upgrading my current x2700 based system to a new Asus Strix X570 board with either a Ryzen 5800x or 5900x depending on availability. In my country the 5800x is available with the 5900x due here in New Zealand late April.

Pricing for high end CPU's here are a bummer with the 11900K and 5900x at circa $NZ900, the 5800x at $NZ775. If I was going to go down the Intel route I would buy a 10th gen 10850K instead which are $NZ654.

Motherboard prices at the high end are crazy here with the Asus Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial Z590 at $NZ3000 and the high end X570 boards from Gigabyte and MSI at $1400.

I think at the present time, that is the better choice.

Built my Intel based system yesterday. Went with the i7 rather than i9 because it's $200 less than what everyone is jacking the i9 up to with exceptionally minimal performance differences. Working beautifully so far.
