    Windows 10 Mobile End of Support: FAQ

    General Windows 10 Mobile

    What does end of support for Windows 10 Mobile entail?
    As of December 10, 2019, Windows 10 Mobile users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free. Third parties or paid support programs may provide ongoing support, but it is important to recognize that Microsoft support will not publicly provide updates or patches for Windows 10 Mobile.

    Only device models that are eligible for Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 are supported through the end date. For Lumia 640 and 640 XL phone models, Window 10 Mobile version 1703 was the last supported OS version and will reach end of support on June 11th, 2019. Please see the Windows 10 Mobile availability per device model for more information.

    What does end of support mean for customers?
    End of support means there will be no more product or security updates for the Windows 10 Mobile operating system (OS). This is in-line with our Lifecycle policy.

    After the end of support, automatic or manual creation of new device backups for settings and some applications will continue for 3 months, ending March 10, 2020. Some services including photo uploads and restoring a device from an existing device backup may continue to work for up to another 12 months from end of support.

    Will my apps continue to be supported?
    Apps are governed by the Modern Lifecycle policy and are independent of the OS Lifecycle policy. App developers (including Microsoft) may end support for an app at any time.

    The Store may continue to work after the end of support date.

    Are Lumia or Microsoft devices supported differently?
    No, the Windows 10 Mobile OS end of support applies to all Windows 10 Mobile devices.

    I just purchased a Windows 10 Mobile phone; can I return the phone for reimbursement?
    Microsoft no longer sells or manufactures Window 10 Mobile devices. Please contact your seller directly to discuss return and reimbursement.

    What should Windows 10 Mobile customers do now?
    With the Windows 10 Mobile OS end of support, we recommend that customers move to a supported Android or iOS device. Microsoft’s mission statement to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, compels us to support our Mobile apps on those platforms and devices.

    Customers who expect to continue using their Windows 10 Mobile device after December 10, 2019 are encouraged to manually create a backup using the Settings->Update & security->Backup->More Options and then tapping Back up now before that date.

    Will existing updates for Windows 10 Mobile continue to be available, and for how long?
    We have no current plans to remove historical Windows 10 Mobile updates from Windows Update.

    Will I still be able to recover my device image?
    Yes. The Windows Device Recovery tool will continue to provide the recovery image for your Windows 10 Mobile device. See Windows Device Recovery Tool FAQ for more details.

    Will my device still work after December 10, 2019?
    Yes. Your Windows 10 Mobile device should continue to work after December 10, 2019, but there will be no updates after that date (including security updates) and device backup functionality and other backend services will be phased out as described above.

    How do I know if I have a Windows 10 Mobile?
    To see which Windows Phone operating system (OS) version is installed on your phone, do the following:

    • Select Settings->System->About
    • Tap More info
      • The Software section shows Windows 10 Mobile
      • The OS Build section shows 10.0.15254.<xxxx> where <xxxx> designates a specific quality update build. The content of each quality update build is documented under the Windows 10 update history page.

    Commercial Business

    Why is Microsoft ending support for Windows 10 Mobile for commercial customers?
    Microsoft is working with many commercial customers to ensure their successful migration to a supported platform prior to the end of support date.

    Technology has evolved along with the needs and expectations of your customers and partners who have already adopted Android or iOS platforms and devices. Microsoft’s mission statement to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, compels us to support our Mobile apps on the supported Android and iOS devices.

    Is there a different migration path for an enterprise who have purchased a large number of Windows 10 Mobile devices?
    The Windows 10 Mobile end of support date is the same for consumer and enterprise. Microsoft encourages all customers to move to a supported Android or iOS device. For Enterprise customers, please contact your account team if you have any additional questions.

    The end of support date applies to all Windows 10 Mobile products, including Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise. To see which Windows Mobile OS is installed on your device, do the following:

    • Select Settings->System->About
    • Tap More info.
    • The Software section displays the OS
