Automatic Android phone backup now included in Google One membership

We’ve all been there. Your kid is checking their latest selfie on your phone, and whoops … dropped and broken, followed by tears (from at least one of you). Or maybe your phone met its demise falling in the pool, being forgotten in a taxi—or any of the ways a phone and all of its precious content can vanish.

For these situations and more, automatic phone backup for Android is now included in your Google One membership. So the next time you break, lose or switch your phone, you won’t lose your photos, videos, contacts and messages—basically, everything that’s important to you.

We’ve taken the standard Android backup (that includes texts, contacts, and apps) and we’re giving you even more. With automatic phone backup by Google One, you’ll also be able to back up original quality photos, videos, and multimedia messages (MMS), and you can manage your backups directly from the Google One app. When you set up your next Android phone, everything you care about can be easily restored.

With Google One, you already get more storage for your photos, videos and documents—giving you the peace of mind that your memories and important files are stored in the cloud. Now with automatic phone backup, we're taking another step in helping you keep the stuff you care about safe.

When I installed it and tried to use it, it would not let me continue unless I chose an upgrade plan, even though right at the top it said Current plan 15GB, which is plenty for me.

Anyone else have any success with this?

I am pretty sure 15GB is what everyone got free or at least after some free bonuses over the years (for running the Security thingy in your Google account now and then which they no longer offer).

I assume membership means you need to pay for at least the bottom paid for tier which is not very expensive but TBH I do not like the recent changes with the way it stopped backing up Photos from phones like OneDrive still does or the actual whole marketing for the changes from GoogleDrive to GoogleOne like premium support etc (I will never use it).

I paid for the 100GB tier but TBH since the above mentioned changes I really have no use for it over OneDrive (I have 1TB with Office 365+my free 30GB's and bonus GB's) unlike Google where I am only showing 104GB but had 37GB free+before mentioned bonuses).

I'm talking about Google One though. I'm a new user and trying to sign up but it requires me to pay for an upgrade so no longer interested.

I know and so was I, GoogleDrive Premium became GoogleOne.

If I go to my account it is now GoogleOne though I signed up when it was GoogleDrive/Back Up and Sync Premium.

Okay, thanks. I use OneDrive, never GoogleDrive Premium.

I'm just going to uninstall it and forget about it.

Same here Z, I have no need for the extra storage and my phone itself auto backs up my data, including photos and all. Seems to me be more of a catch all for more money. The auto backup is in my cell settings. I can see the backups in my drive also.

It would not let me continue with my current 15GB plan either.

Googles tactics > I had the same 15GB everyone got free then as I said a few bonus GB's which came to total of 19GB, I then paid for 100GB but I show as having 104GB total so they sold me 85GB basically as they are not counting the initial free 15GB.

MS I had the same 15GB eveyone got for free then they decied to double this if you enable Camera Roll and then after a while wanted to revert that back to 15GB but users cried out and they quietly let users keep the 30GB if they clicked on a link hidden on the MS site by a certain date/deadline or they loose the extra 15GB (I think I found it by reading this forum and got there with 2 days to spare).

So I had a total of 30.5GB with MS with 15GB+15GB+ 0.5GB for a user referral then I paid for Office 365 and got 1TB (1024GB actually) with that so it correctly shows now as 1.03TB.
