Facebook is using your 2FA phone number to target you with ads

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018

Alongside the myriad other scandals the social network is currently embroiled in, it recently emerged this week that the company is using its users' need for security as a means of invading their privacy.

The company yesterday issued a statement confirming that phone numbers provided by users to Facebook for the purpose of securing their account via two-factor authentication were, in turn, being used by Facebook to serve up ads.

Two-factor authentication, if you're not familiar, is a security measure that aims to secure your account by adding a second step to the login process in addition to requiring a password. This is usually done by asking you to insert a code sent to your phone.

The statement from the Facebook spokesperson reads,

"We use the information people provide to offer a better, more personalized experience on Facebook, including ads. We are clear about how we use the information we collect, including the contact information that people upload or add to their own accounts. You can manage and delete the contact information you’ve uploaded at any time.

Block FB totally in HOSTS if you don't use it.
They have been proven to track non-Facebook users too, by security companies.
One way is through all those link icons at the bottom of webpages like:

I have never ever used it, and I'm totally against it.
If you do some research, you'll find they are dangerous to personal information security.

I fail to understand where is the "surprising" factor, it is quite clear and normal behaviour to harvest user data, of course it is always in the best interest of the user, who say otherway have something to hide or is a tin foil hat fool.

2FA used to mean Two Factor Authentication, but that's so yesteryear...

For Facebook, and let's be honest for all other social networks the 2FA means Two Factor Advertisement. Giving them a cell number provides advertisers positive identification for customizing their ads to you and your location.

You maybe driving around at lunchtime and it won't be long before your smartphone receives texts, or even Siri/Google saying:

Hey %user name%, it's lunchtime. The %restaurant% is a half a mile away on your right, would you like to make a reservation?

One can't help to wonder, would other type of establishment advertise similarly in Las Vegas, NV? That might be very popular with certain demographic...
