When I had background noise behind it, I couldn't hear much noise on playback but because of whatever processing was happening in the mic to try and reduce the noise, it affected the result.

I would definitely try it in as a quiet an environment as possible, to see if it makes a difference.

I'd also be tempted to try Audacity and see what the levels are like there, just in case it's something to do with the echolink software itself? Also, Audacity has the advantage that you could experiment with levels offline without being in the middle of a conversation with someone.

But as I said I don't know much about this stuff. @fireberd may have some better suggestions.

(In case you've not come across it, Audacity is free audio recording software and (I think?) pretty much all you'd need to do is install it, check it was using the right input source, and press the record button and see what the levels look like. With my mic I need to turn it down to stop the levels going into the red. )

Audacity is a good program to use as it will give you a waveform representation of the mic signal. Sort of like having an Oscilloscope to display the wave form.

aww 73s to yeah hope you are having a great day , yeah i got Audacity d-loaded have not had a time to install it yet but will get to it very soon, just busy with work and so on, and dealing with all the smoke in eastern washington. But once i get it install i will see how this mic is performing for sure.

Yeah, I have niece that recently moved to Spokane, from Kansas City, and she has been talking about the fires.

oh yeah its nasty over here smoke so bad you have to put on a N95 mask to go outside.

Sorry to resurrect a really old thread, however I may have an answer for anyone still searching for this.
Simply download the software Driver Booster
let it do the scan and then tell it to update the audio drivers it finds.
reboot
Voila, your blue snowball should now register appropriate levels.
You can now uninstall driver booster.
This fixed the issue for me and I hope it helps at least a few of you.
