    Another thing that can happen after a Windows Update (or Driver Update)
    is that the "Stereo Mix" option for SPDIF gets disabled.

    This will cause .mp3 files (or other lossy files) to not play any sound.

    This might just be specific to Creative sound cards,
    but worth mentioning as it's quite common.

    I always check to make sure this option is still enabled after any update:
