I'm just giving build 8703.1 a go and finding the same as @Cliff S. The bass is exceptional, very punchy and tight but not at the expense of the top end which is still defined and clear

Matt, try Realtek Audio Console from Station Drivers: get it here http://ftp.station-drivers.com/index...html=1&lang=en

The Realtek FTP has a bunch of internal development tools to adjust sound levels, compression, phase, etc, so I'd say they definitely mess with sound quality between drivers to make up for lower quality DAC's. However, it is true that sound quality depends ultimately on each motherboard's/laptop's DAC and not just the Realtek codec chip.

For instance, I have a dedicated sound card in my desktop and it trumps the hell out of my laptop (that has Realtek) with any driver, any at all. Dedicated sound cards/DAC's just win.

I don't understand how a dac can be better or worse, a dac does only one thing, it transforms digital audio to analog, the only thing that could make a sound better is the quality of audio file>speakers/headphones>amp>dac.

Again, you gotta watch the high end, it's a little scratchy; but, over all pretty smooth!

Hey, just an update, I got my gaming headset and mic running in the end, I got my HDA 8648 installed, but i had to go and switch to microsoft audio drivers, but not uninstalling the realtek ones, if I uninstall them they just reinstall when i restart. For some reason Windows 10 + Realtek Drivers = headset mic not working. I got my mic working but not quite satisfied with the audio now, Realtek sounded better for listening to music. Not sure if I should hate realtek or Microsoft at this point wish i could have Realtek for Speakers and Microsoft drivers for mic/headset.
