I'm currently sticking to 8688, and will try to install the latest Windows 10 IP build - if sound fails, I'll revert (again), uninstall 8688 and install 8648, and try to upgrade again.
I hope that this gets fixed, though. I like 8688 so slightly more than 8648, for my ancient setup - but if 8648 is what it takes to get onto the new IP build, I'm more than happy to use it again.
Anyone here tried the non WHQL 8700 posted in StationDrivers forum? I'm using the 8648 driver for a long time and, switching between restore points from those versions, seems to be a good driver. But one of my kitties is very ill and maybe I'm not ok to do such comparison. If anyone here is in the mood to do such test could be very helpfull...
For now that driver is unofficial. I'm always wary of downloading and updating when the drivers still aren't official and signed.
Btw, it also has a known issue:
Audio device may fail to start after driver installation on Windows 10 April 2019 Update with error "The specified service has been marked for deletion" and there won't be any audio until system is rebooted when this error fixes on its own.
note that the Intel "IntcDMic" driver requires minimum Win10 RS3 (v1709), not RS2 (v1703).
an 8694_UAD_Gigabyte (Nahimic 3) driver is available, which I'll use on my Gigabyte board - released a few days after the 8694 HDA & UAD drivers were posted.
regarding 8700 non-whql, stay away from that one until at least an 8700 or higher version is officially WHQL'ed by MS.
Comparing carefully now 8648 x 8700 just decided to keep 8648, but hadn't any bug with 8700, but I'm using Win 10 1809 and always make a reboot after driver instalation. Tomorrow they shall release a WHQL'ed driver, 8699 or 8700... By the way, anyone with Win 10 1903 (April update) had any problems with 8648?
