Because of my involvement last weekend in the trivia contest, I didn't try any other driver.

I'm still happily plugging away with 8648 on my ancient system, and based upon what I am reading, not going to change, either.

Those videos that Cliff posted, particularly the second ... metalcore? one - yeah, I could most definitely feel the bass enveloping my head using my Astro A40s. I can also feel it very, very well in listening to all the Prodigy tunes I've been listening too, as well as Miss Monique's MidngGames PodCast hour long mix.

Until something comes along that several people confirm is simply much more robust than 8648, I'm sticking to it.
Well I try them all out John so if I find one that I think is better I'll give you a heads up

I guess I did, not sure maybe I was leaving something out. I inplace upgraded today. Bug hasn't appeared yet. If it does I will retry with clean install. I think Realtek drivers somehow screw up my system if I try update them. Uninstalling breaks system tray sound icon, or the timings at startup. So for now I will stick with windows update Realtek drivers and never touch them again as long as bug doesn't come back...
Boot up is slow as hell now too. Maybe that's why I haven't seen the bug yet. Will try speed up with Windows Performance Toolkit and then will see if its truly fixed.
This bugs me for ages on laptop, and lately on PC too
Bug is back. Inplace upgrade didn't fix it...
I try clean install Realtek drivers, but I wont install them at all yet. I even blocked the Microsoft update ones from installing automatically. I want to check if I get bug w/o Realtek drivers.
I'm wondering whether I must install Realtek drivers before nvidia drivers. Maybe nvidia cause a conflict...

If only I had the time, I would do so as well.

Well I know what sort of sound you like taking build 8648 as a base however it's a very subjective thing. I've stated many times in this thread that if you want to listen to music at it's best then listen to it through a good quality Hi-Fi system not on a computer.

This should give you a massive idea, then.

I like as much clarity as possible, first and foremost. If any given driver sounds more {muffled / subdued / crackly / static-y, etc} than 8648, it gets an immediate toss.

Secondly, I listen to a few different genres: Metal, hard rock, some pop rock, some hip-hop, a *lot* of techno (mostly trance) and some classical. So a single EQ setting is never enough for me. However, sometime since the last time I actually tested 8648, my EQ was reset to flat, as one normally should do when testing sound (more on that below). And everything I have mentioned in the last 2 weeks regarding 8648 was with the native RealTek EQ set to flat - I only discovered this yesterday as I went to listen to a piece of music for which my standard EQ settings (similar to the Powerful setting, only it focuses only on the 2 frequencies on either end of the spectrum) was not appropriate, so I went to change it - and saw the EQ was disabled.

8648 is, by far, the clearest and cleanest sounding set of drivers I've listened to on my machine in a very long time - and I'm always testing sound through the same A40 headset that I have had for a few years now (circa 2015, IIRC).

I think that last real test I performed and posted here I also performed with my personal EQ settings enabled - but even with it flat, the sound is super crisp, it really feels like I have a pair of rather high end headphones on - and even at high volumes, there is almost no discernible distortion (until I get close to 90% vol on both the headphones and in Windows sound applet). When I can do that and still listen to the music that I listen to, I know I have a goldmine in play.

    I have AsRock z370 extreme 4 with ALC1220.
Had audio issues since getting it.
Mostly the occasional 'pop' or 'click', but on a lot of the drivers I've tried, the front panel I use for my headphones is essentially rendered useless.
Sound becomes distorted and when above a certain level just disintegrates.

Only driver that for the most part is good (and I've tried dozens) is 8210 - that's of course now an ancient driver, which is quite sad that AsRock don't seem to care despite many similar customer issues.

A fair number of us here favour version 6.0.1.8648. It's clear, well balanced and has a good punchy bass.
