No I am squarely stuck in the HDA world like you DDelo , my X99 MB is one generation too old for UAD it seems , and honestly HDA or UAD doesn't matter to me, sound seems the same..... I had UAD on a Laptop for a while but it was defective and got returned.( and not replaced)
I was just joking KB and of course the driver type is irrelevant with regards to the sound we hear. As I said my laptop is in the shop with a fan issue (most likely). If that's not the case and its something more expensive, I have already spotted a 17" Dell one with an 8-gen CPU and I will be replacing the old lappy....and then I'll be the one who will abandon you guys!!!

Seems like I'm the only one who still prefer 8648 over 8673. In my case, the clearly bump in low and highs brings some distortions, noticiable in cymbals, drums and bass details, lost a little stage effect too. Just for info: Gigabyte Gaming 5 with ALC 1220 codec, using analogical output connected to an analogical system, from the 80's... and 2 BIG towers...
Sorry for the english errors, but the forum here is getting even more interesting, focused and informative, couldn't resist to participate. Congrats for you (us) all!

You're English is fine, no worries. I'm not too great with the technical side of things, but everyone here tries their best to help when possible. Glad you enjoy the forum!

Btw, I have yet to update to 8673, will do so ASAP. Hopefully I'll like it as much as everyone else.

My Realtek speakers seem to be balanced OK, but the balance control in the level setting has no effect. They remain balanced no matter how much I unbalance them. My Windows 10 says my driver is up to date. Not a serious fault, but would be pleased if I can find a cure.

Your english is fine so don't worry about it.
I think your observations of this driver are really good and I agreee with them. Build 8648 is more analogue sounding and 8673 has some digital fizz evident. However I've always said that if I want to listen to good sounding music I'll sit back and listen to my Hi-Fi

Now that is the most clear statement, regarding sound from a PC!...a PC without external dedicated DAC and Amplifier (and even then) will never come close to a Hi-Fi system!

John, we seem to be the last ones, to upgrade from 8648....!
Unfortunately my laptop is currently in the shop, for a fan change. Hoping to get it back soon, to try 8673.
I'd have done that myself - but I'm a hardware guy, so....

I've been holding out on 8648 too, but now Cliff has been good enough to post the ROG HDA link ( much smaller , ready to go download ) of 8673 I may need to give them a try too.....
    Cool!

Just updated from 8648 to 8673 and first time in a while I hear any difference.
    Also cool!

Glad to see some solidarity amongst us RealTek users and what we like to hear.

I'm abandoning Intel as they abandoned 1st and 2nd gen Core CPUs after Meltdown and Spectre. My next build will be firmly based upon the Threadripper series of CPUs.

I hope to have my new build started by the end of summer - it's time, for sure!

Glad to see a lurker actually post, and on a subject near and dear to my heart.

Since you make mention of this, I think I might have to dig out both versions and do a direct side by side comparison (obviously not simultaneously) and see if the same applies - I'm picky as hell as to what I like, and of the last several builds this year, 8648 is what I am still on because they just sound that damned good.

As for English errors - I'm Indian, and my parents are 1st gen immigrants to the US - trust me when I say I can understand many different spoken English dialects easily - I saw nothing wrong with what you wrote.

Finally, welcome to the forums, and hope to see you lurk less and post more!

    Indeed!

I've just happened to have repaired over 25 laptops and diagnosed at least another 35-40 (full disassembly), another 50+ (partial disassembly) and hundreds (pure software / no disassembly). I'm comfortable taking them apart.

Then again, I kinda have to be, running a (private) repairshop, don't I?

Impossible to not agreed with that, Realtek is a cheap solution, but not necessarily a bad solution, we all music lovers do the best we could ($$$) to achieve "that" thing that make us love it so much. Realtek make drivers in an insane way, quantity (ftp guys?) and quality. No one here's seems to care about making benchmarks in games or anything else, so...i'ts about music, right?...it's not placebo like some users posted before, at least for my onboard audio codec. Realtek is very enigmatic about their products, drivers, etc. Seems that we're can only count with each other help...
