Which audio cable will I need for my new monitor?

I have recently purchased a new monitor, an "MSI Pro MP251 24.5 Inch 100Hz IPS FHD Monitor".
It has speakers, and on the back there is a picture of a pair of headphones by the audio socket, I presume that I just need a cable with a 3.5mm jack at either end? If so I have already tried to look for them on ebay, but the ones that come up are either abroad and/or priced really high. Have I got the correct cable in mind, and if so are there any cheap, local alternatives?

The audio goes through HDMI or DP as they both support passthrough so whatever cable you use to display the image on the screen will also do the audio.

The headphone jack on the back is exactly that for headphones.

I did wonder if perhaps the audio went through the HDMI, but I wasn't sure. I didn't think sound would go through it, with it being connected to a graphics card I didn't think it was possible for anything else to go through it. All my previous monitors have been VGA connections so this is why I wasn't sure.
    Thanks for the information .

My ASUS 27" monitor has VGA, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort connections along with a standard Audio In for the built-in speakers and Earphone Out Port. The audio cable has the standard stereo male plug on both ends. Color code is light green which is same for the port on the back of the Desktop computer.

You just have to use the HDMI audio device (either Intel Display Audio or nVidia high definition audio) with your HDMI cable to your monitor.

The days when you needed separate analogue audio cables are almost gone.

These days the HDMI specification supports bidirectional signals for video, audio and ethernet networking as well as CEC (control functions like power and volume) and content protection (DRM)... so really you only need just the one HDMI cable to provide interconnectivity between two devices with HDMI ports.

HDMI also supports signal passthrough... so if you had, say, a laptop connected to a monitor with no speakers but an attached soundbar then the laptop could control the soundbar if both laptop and soundbar were connected to the monitor by HDMI.

Perhaps surprisingly, the only thing HDMI cannot do (at present?) is pass closed-captioning, like sub-titles, as a data stream... there's just no built-in support for it.

Note that HDMI cables have different capabilities. For a standard monitor you just need an old Category 1 'standard' HDMI cable. That will output video up to 1080i but won't allow ethernet connectivity. For that you'll need an HDMI cable labelled as 'standard with ethernet'. However, these days even the cheapest HDMI cables like the 'Amazon Basics' range appear to be Category 2 (4k video, ethernet) so the problems in the past of 'old' HDMI cables not working with new HDMI-enabled equipment also seem to have died out.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks all for the information, is much appreciated.

And yes its been a while since a monitor upgrade. The CRT did what I needed it to, I only use the computer for email, web browsing and the odd few games, so it met my needs. But there are some things where a bigger monitor is more beneficial, as some programmes don't fit on a smaller screen so well, as they're designed for a widescreen monitor, my email program has recently updated and doesn't work so well on a small screen, but is much better on a widescreen monitor.

Yes XGA screens would be hard to use today as many apps will not scale correctly on a HD res that low and is not considered extended HD. I would assume multi tasking would be hard to achieve and areas like multiple windows on screen at once could be difficult.

imo Lowest res viable today is 1366 x 768 which is WXGA so its widescreen version of your CRT and is common on 13" laptop screens today. Even this resolution is limiting at times.

Having your new monitor must feel like the world has opened up for you lol

The audio from the monitor speakers might not be loud enough for you. You will have to try it out to find out.
